I was under the impression that there was some sort of a "law of diminishing returns" that applied to refineries, in that they're less effective the more you build. Am I wrong? I'm trying to remember where I got that idea... I think I might have gotten it from the tooltip in the game.

Everything has diminished returns until a certain amount of time has passed. For instance, upgrading civilian infrastructure doesnt pay for itself till around 15 mins. has passed (for lvl 1).. this is why you NEVER expand unless you intend to immediately spend coin on at least 1 lvl.
Extractors are the same way... a .6/sec roid will pay for the extractor on it in what? about 2.5 mins? i think... resource-wise. Money-wise you'd have to look at the market... but I'd average it out to about 5 mins.
