Re: Rome: Total War
I am a addicted too. I downloaded a mod that lets you play as any of the factions even the Senate. So i am in the middle of a Macedon game. (Me=Alexander the Great II) And as for assualting stone walls ONAGERS heavy onagers to be exact but regualr ones do alright. Like that you can take out the gateway and let ur battering ram go up to the door without problems, take out walls and towers. BTW we all need to get some games together multiplayer is supposed to be fun. They are basically custom battles. God i would kill though for a full imperial campaign multiplayer that you could save and start up another day.
BTW as rome does anyone know how to get Legionary First Cohorts. And as a side note Macedonian cavalry owns you.RX-78-2 Gundam EFSF Protoype Close Combat Mobile Suit Armor: Luna Titanium Armament: 2x Beam Sabers, 2x 60mm Head vulcan guns 380mm Hyper bazooka, Beam Rifle, Beam Javelin, Hyper Hammer, Gundam Hammer, shield

Fogetaboutit, my Carth War Elephants stomp all!
The Legionary First Cohorts are post Marian Reform (as are Praetorion and any Legionary). You'll need $1170 to build one unit (62 soldiers). Samnite Gladiators and Urban Cohort are better deals as far as hit points per dollar (2 hp vs. 1).
From the Prima guide:
The "Marian Reform" was the reoragnization of the Roman military by Senator Gaius Marius. Marius made it legal for ordinary (poor) Romans to join his army. In return for years of military service, soldiers received land. This reform passed in the People's Assembly without the Senate's approval. Thus began the first professional-standing Roman Legionary army, which is still recongnized today.
In this game, Roman troops produced after this point are much improved. This event occurs the first time you build a top-level barracks-class building (the fifth-tier URBAN BARRACKS).

Re: Rome: Total War
^^^^Negative Squid Marian Reforms comes when any of the Roman factions build an Imperial Palace. I never noticed legionary first cohorts. I only noticed them in custom battle mode. I never saw them in the Imperial campaign so my armies were formed around regular legionary cohorts. Looks like I need a start a new Julii campaign after I am done with Macedon.

Re: Rome: Total War
It is a bit too easy to dominate with the romans. You can just piss all over the primative Galls which gives you enough money to piss all over everyone else.
Does anyone know how to cut out squalor? I can't tax many of my towns because of such high levels of squalor even just after upgrading the govornor's building. Do the academy or sewer techs help?Wintermute

Re: Rome: Total War
I think that's right. I've been able to stop plaques as well just by building sewers or baths. You can't really diminish squalor, as far as I know. You can, however, counteract it with more positive constructions.

Re: Rome: Total War
check out www.totalwar.org forums for some really really detailed info on how this game works and strategy insights. It turns out that the deep formation phalanx is actually weaker than if you string your phalanx out in one long line.

Re: Rome: Total War
It should be, but its not.
In RTW they have completely removed all rank bonuses. Whereas in MTW it was vital for spearmen to have them several ranks deep, it now makes no difference. The only advantage to ranks is in replacing dead men before a gap appears in the line, but only the front men fight and they gain nothing from having anyone behind them. There has already been one patch and this issue wasn't addressed, but maybe it will be in future patches.Wintermute

Re: Rome: Total War
I haven't tried it yet. I read the bit about the battles taking longer (?) and didn't read any further. I like the idea of realism of course, but there's plenty to keep me interested right now. What do you like about the mod?

Re: Rome: Total War
I only used it for about like 5 turns before it crashed but I like the addition of a "early" hastati, principee, and triarii. I also like how they were all available right at the start of the game. DOn't have to wait til I get an army barrasarcks to train Triarii. Of course the better barracks you get stronger versions of those early units. (Boy I think I explained this all wrong.)l

Re: Rome: Total War
I've been using the Total Realism Mod (v5.2 with Patch 5.3) installed over RTW with Patch 1.2 for several days. No problem.
As to "Why" this is an interesting mod? More cities. Better balanced factions. The slower battle is due primarily to slowing the movement on the battlefield. Fights are tougher, but "fairer", to my way of thinking.
FWIW, if you install this mod, you will NOT be able to play "regular" RTW. At least I'm not able to do so.

Re: Rome: Total War
Finally completed my first campaign. There is nothing better than seeing your mercenary elephants trampling fellow Romans to take your 50th city.
I did have problems against the British chariots though and received a couple of hidings before I managed to get some large armies in place and out maneuver them on the campaign map. Any strategies for dealing with them?
For those of you that haven't tried it, the multiplayer makes this game. The RTW AI is pretty shoddy, even compared to MTW but a human opponent will always give you a challenge, particularly if you have as devious friends as I do. Give it a try.Wintermute
