Discussion: Other Multiplayer Games / Strategy Games (Strat) - Napoleon: Total War - Napoleon: Total War was announced recently, it's a new game (not an expansion for Empire)
Napoleon: Total War was announced recently, it's a new game (not an expansion for Empire) and it's due out in February 2010. Apparently there will be three campaigns, Italy, Egypt and Europe/Asia. You can play as Bonaparte himself or as his enemies (including Wellington).
Napoleon: Total War defines a new standard within the genre with exciting characters and a cinematic narrative, mind-blowing battle sequences and an unrivalled mix of turn-based and real-time strategy.
Three new episodic campaigns: Take command and lead your armies on land and sea over three campaigns: Italy, Egypt and Mastery of Europe. The seamless mix of objective-based missions and sandbox experience makes this the most complete Total War experience to date.
Cutting-edge multiplayer: Napoleon features fully integrated multiplayer modes and a complete set of online functionalities: Steam achievements, gameplay bonuses, uniform editor and voice communications.
All new Napoleonic battles and units: Advanced weaponry enables new tactical options and even more exciting real-time battles on an epic scale, while the highly detailed environments and improved battlefield buildings guarantee a realistic recreation of famous historical battles.
Meh. Looks like a mod that costs money. Voice communications could be cool but I haven't played Empire much since it came out. I'll probably pick it back up again when they patch in the campaign multiplayer and maybe then this expansion will look interesting. Right now it doesn't. CA's crowning achievement is still Rome: Total War and while finally introducing naval combat they seem to just be trying to rehash the same stuff with prettier graphics and different textures, doesn't look much different with this expansion. And it's even too far away to be considered a bug fixer expansion.
It would be nice if they came out with a civil war game. Of course probably wouldn't have as big a market.
"I was never much a fan to playing anything online without having to manage my own private server. The Internet Gaming community has evolved to cater to the lowest common denominator and practically ruined my desire to have any part of it. But not here. It is something wonderfully different." - frozenchrome

There was a big feature on Napoleon: TW in the recent issue of PC Gamer UK (September issue). Apparently, turns will last two weeks, and there will be a much larger focus on supplies, so you can't just steamroll from one capital city to the next - you have to take farming areas or have good supply lines to feed your troops. I guess this is because one of Napoleon's big mistakes was not keeping his troops supplied in Russia, so much of his force was rendered useless before the battles began.

Thinking about the fact how *cough* unfinished Empire was when it came and to a high extent still is (AI, dilpomacy etc) I don't think I will be that eager to get Napoleon. Sorry for sounding bitter, but I have been a long time total war fan and Empire was just....bad.
It is not often that I encounter across myself when researching a topic. I found the following in a recent article on the uses of ethnography in virtual environments:
