RTW is pretty good. They just released the Napoleonic Mod for Total War.

Pretty awesome, but I love the Napoleonic Era.
I heartily recommend the stand-alone expansion for Act of War, "High Treason". It is the most enjoyable modern mil-RTS i've ever played.

I'm really digging Company of Heroes (at least the multiplayer beta, courtesy of Fileplanet). IMO, it emphasises squad tactics and combined arms over rushing and zerging. And god, you gotta love the physics engine and the beautiful graphics, as well as the great opportunities for field defences. Barbed wire, mines, tank traps - you name it.

If going the RTW route I would recommend the latest Rome Total Realism mod as well as the Napoleon War Mod. The mod is designed with multiplayer in mind as the RTW AI was not built for Napoleonic era strategy.
I too am very interested in Company of Heroes. Im downloading the singleplayer demo (1.8 GB) right now. The skirmish mode in the demo actually has the full tech trees for both sides so you get to play with all the toys.
