    This is GREAT news !

I've also been following it for a long time. Codemasters was going to publish it but somehow it didnt work out. At some point, we thought the game was canceled. Battlefront is a much better choice when it comes to realistic war games.

Now I must send a PM to Derdmeh because we were following Battlefront 's future release list and wondering what might be the game they mentioned in a recent interview with Armchair General :

Besides the known games, we also have a couple more surprises up our sleeves! Both are games which have not yet been announced, and at least one of these will be BIG news. And if I say BIG, I mean unbelievable freaking huge news. If all goes well, we’ll spill the beans already this month. Only so much: it’s WW2.
Looks like ToW is THE game

    STATEMENTS

Martin van Balkom, Battlefront.com president: Over the years many game developers claimed to have in the works a game which will challenge Combat Mission as the most realistic WW2 ground combat simulator. All such claims usually disappeared right after release. With one exception. When 1C, the makers of the IL-2 Sturmovik series, one of the most realistic and most successful combat flight simulators of the past years, announced the making of their WW2RTS title, the gaming community - and us included - knew that this wouldn't be just another clickfest RTS game with (in most but not all cases) pretty graphics. When we got the chance to check out a beta of the game after its long history of development, we immediately realized that it has the same magic which always separated Combat Mission from the rest of the pack. Theatre of War is no mere arcade game with a WW2 background, but a real-time military simulation of the biggest war of the century, and with its top-notch graphics and animations and detailed and realistic combat environment, is truly the only worthy successor to the Combat Mission series we've ever seen. In cooperation with 1C, Battlefront is determined to add our own experience to the remaining development path, and to give the wargaming community the WW2 RTS game they have been waiting for for years.

Nikolay Baryshnikov, International Sales Director, 1C Company: Theatre of War is a very important project for us. I believe it has all the potential to become the new benchmark in the genre and the new Holy Grail for all the lovers of Combat Mission and Close Combat series. Just like with the original IL-2 Sturmovik we have spent many years developing the game, constantly enhancing every single element, every feature, until we were completely satisfied with the result. We put all resources and passion we had behind this game. And I am very happy that we have finally managed to find a partner that is as excited in the game as we are. I think that our friends at Battlefront.com are not only skilled professionals but real enthusiasts. We share the same principle - making games is art and passion first and business second. I'm sure that together we will be able to obtain good results and make Theatre of War one of the most popular wargames ever.

Re: Theater of War web site live...

I've been reading things over at the Battlefront forums, and I thought I'd post a couple things I picked up.

The first interesting thing is that this game is being produced for a broad war-sim audience but with the Battlefront community of hard-core military gamers in mind, many of whom are themselves historians. They are grognards, and they grog everything in sight, constantly. One thing this entails is that they as a whole actively hate real-time strategy games, preferring to place all gaming emphasis on tactical decision-making that is responsive to real-world battle parameters. At the moment there seems to be a general excitement that this game will defy everyone's RTS hatred. The community has no idea how this will work, but Battlefront and 1C are making bold promises.

The second thing is maybe only interesting to people who are familiar with Combat Mission. The new build of the Combat Mission engine will simulate a contemporary conflict between the US and Syria. The developers have promised to move quickly from Syria back to WWII. This game (ToW) does not replace CMx2. So, there will be two WWII tactical command games coming out, ToW (Real Time) and CMx2 (turn based).

Allow me to add 2 cents of my own: I have never been as obsessed by any game as I was by Combat Mission. The intense pressure to make exactly the right decisions became something like a pathology for me. The fact that they have done extensive historical research on Tables of Equipment, armor thickness/density/purity/angle etc etc, just makes my head spin with joy.
