Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
I have a much different opinion of it than the others that played beta. I found it way too spammy in the unit amounts. There don't appear any true battle tactics except amassing units and sending them to battle. In addition, the factions all feel the same with regard to all the units except for the experimental types.
I prefer COH in it's smaller-scale, more interactive, less time dependent, less spammy nature. However, that's just my opinion. Now, a RTS of this scale with the elements of COH would be truly great, but this feels like a step back if you ask me.
I know my thoughts probably seem irrational and I'm sure someone will enlighten me as to all the tactics that are required when playing, but unless they've spent an equal amount of time with COH and actually think it compares, then I won't really listen. It is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
I think the game play you are looking for is in the single player campaign modes, where scenarios are already setup for you. I agree I've seen way too many strategies where players will amass 1 particular unit and rush headlong into battle. However, I've been successful at overcoming such spam players by using the variety of units and structures in the game, and I think that is key in understanding why this game is tactfully delightful.

Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
I don't have to play single player COH to get that from it. In fact, I've never even played the campaign. I don't play against anything other than other humans, in any game I play. It's my rule.

Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
How big are the maps on CoH?
The maps on SC are as large as worlds can be. Not just small maps that take place on games like Dawn of War or StarCraft. I can't really compare CoH as I still don't have it.
I think that all RTS games can get the amass one thing and then run headlong into battle.
If you don't set up a proper D then you should fall to such a tactic.
This has been my failing but I am getting better at the my D for SC.
I think that this game had the right name: Supreme Commander.
It's a Tactical game that steps up to the strategic level. But this is just my opinion.

Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
CoH is definately the way to go if you want unique units and distinctive unit vs unit combat with a good dose of tactics involved. SC is more of the 'out number and overwhelm' kinda game. The most tactics involved with SC is the "Should I zerg the enemy position or use a complex step by step plan and eliminate their defenses?" question you ask yourself at the start of each game.
There are some minor differences between the units, but its all unexplained. For example the Aeon Frigate has anti-submarine weapondry while the UEF Frigate has anti-intel equipment. You could plow a line of Aeon Frigates into any encounter and laugh at subs and torpedo turrets (2 countermeasures per ship per launch) and you can hide your UEF frigates within range of your enemy radar/sonar (except Omni which trumps all) and they won't see you until they fly or sail right into your gun sights.
Still...how important are tactics when the best way to subvert Anti-Air is not to counter with land or sea, but to build a large number of T3 fighters and fly them in circles over the AA guns then bomb them into submission while they're trying to hit your fast moving fighters. My sanity is not in question...
It was a confirmed casualty some time ago.
Light, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I had to kill because they ticked me off.

Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
I just bought CoH to get a better idea of the views that are being stated about CoH. It is intense and fast paced. The only thing I wish was that I could scroll out to a much larger vantage point similar to Supreme Commander.
But all in all I hope there are some people playing CoH tomorrow night I would look forward to a learning experience (aka a serious thrashing).

Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
You can kinda zoom out in coh. Use the tactical map and you can see all your units in real time all over the map.
I dont think CoH and supcom can be compared all that much. SC is about macro and strategy. Tons of units, huge spaces to move them in. CoH is about micro and tactics. How to use cover, combinations of units, etc. SC has an economy, CoH doesnt. I think the only way you can compare them is by asking yourself which one you prefer since they are completely different RTS'.

Has anyone picked this game up yet in the US?

Re: Supreme Commander: Februaury Release
I'll be picking up my copy tomorrow at Gamestop. Crossing my fingers that it'll play on my system in some form (I doubt it). At the very least it'll force me to upgrade.
Btw, comparing this game to ANY existing RTS is pointless. The whole idea was to produce something "different", which SC does IMO. Multiplayer 2v2 type games are where this game will come into its own. 1v1 games on this scale and the game loses its luster, which is simply massive amounts of units on a huge gamespace. LOOOONG games in the turn-based category will be the norm.
My first game was with a GM and three others and it was total carnage; my computer vomited of course.
Anyways, I foresee some of us getting together I hope and duking it out on TS. Practice, practice, practice.
