Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Who plays this?
Hmmm.... you mean automatically go from idle to repairs without input? I don't think so, not that I am aware of at least. Would be nice if they did, however. The nearest thing to that would be to queue build/repair commands through shift-right-clicking. One thing to remember about repairs is that the benefit of having multiple builders assisting in either construction or repairs caps off at a certain point. If you play the Imperial Guard, this is especially true. They get a max of three builders (called Techpriest Enginseers), which are the best builders in the game in terms of both speed, durability, and efficiency but may have only one unit repairing at a time (on vehicles... I think you can put more on buildings, scaled up by building size/worth). Races whose builder units come in "packs" or squads (eg: Ork Gretchins and Necron Builder Scarabs) also follow a similar rule of thumb in that as their builders are "reinforced", they self-fulfil any benefit to having additional builders assist with their tasks. Thus, putting 2 or more full squads on construction/repairs wastes time.
This site has loads of useful information and tips for all the races, including some strategy. Check it out:

Who's up for more fun this Saturday? If we're playing an expansion, I need to know which one as I'll have to buy it.

I got my vanilla to work by patching it. However, If you buy an expansion, I'd suggest DC. The single player campaign is good, and the Tau and Necrons are fun to play.
Do or do not, there is no try....

Saturday sounds good to me.
Buying DC would net you the most for your buck as an intro to DoW's current endgame. Winter Assault only adds the Imperial Guard army (which is incredibly fun to play, IMO) whereas DC will give you two new races to tinker with in addition to the first four races from DoW (for those of you who have the original DoW and DC combined).

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Who plays this?
I bought DC today. Why on earth have they put a limit on turrets? Being completely unable to defend my base ruins a lot of the fun.
Are we having a session tomorrow or do we want to leave it for a week?BFCL TF2 league admin

You shouldnt be turtling and placing like 300 turrets.

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Who plays this?
300 is a bit excessive just to defend a res point. Maybe for the main base and any subsequent full bases I set up though.

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Who plays this?
Which race's turrets are you trying to place? Turrets are limited by the number of HQ's you have built. I think the IG, Space Marines, and Chaos are able to place 8 turrets per HQ. Not sure about the Eldar. The Ork turrets (WAAAGH!! Banners) are directly tied to their economic system and may be built without limitation so far as I understand. The Necron are limited to 4 turrets per Monolith structure. And the Tau's only turret comes from upgraded listening posts to balance the insane rage of fire that their units can achieve with upgrades, in addition to being the strongest "shooty" race in the game (weakest at melee).
The numbers are limited for balance reasons. The Necron turrets, for example, are the best turrets in the game. Unlike other turrets, the Necron turrets when fully upgraded are more powerful and more effective against all units, not a specialization of either anti-infantry or ant-vehicle. That is why they are limited to 4. Add that to the fact that you can now place a turret on any visible portion of the map that isn't obstructed; you no longer need to place them within the control area of your buildings, and turret's value becomes a whole lot more than just defensive.
This also frees up space at your main base and allows builders to join in a more offensive role at forward positions. The Imperial Guard are especially adept at placing and maintaining offensive turrets with the most durable builder unit in the game (wears commander equivalent armor + higher HPs).
And Ninja is absolutely correct. Map control is vital to a strong economy, which tends to preclude heavy base defenses. Once the game progress in to T3 and T4 stages, turrets get owned pretty quickly anyway, especially if you have lots of them all clumped together. Think the Force Commander's Orbital Bombardment ability or Land Raiders that take out a turret in two shots... or Eldar Fire Prism Grav Tanks that do high area effect damage, leveling groups of turrets at a time if they are bunched up, etc.
Turrets definitely play a role, but one shouldn't go bonkers on them until one's economy can support it, usually after everything else is built and upgraded. By that time, they are usually only good for slowing down the enemy's incursion into your more important base structures, giving you time to respond.
I find that I almost never build turrets during the early game unless I am getting rushed and can’t stop the attack (maybe I am busy rushing his ally’s base, or have spread my SP capturing teams too thinly). At that point, I build a turret to cover parts of my base that I expect him to move toward once he’s through with his current target, which buys time to respond.
The other thing to remember is not to panic when you get rushed early in the game. T1 infantry take forever to do any significant damage to buildings. Your base will take a beating for quite some time, giving you opportunity to finish capturing strat.points before responding so that your economy doesn't take a hit as well as your base. Focusing on expansion and economic development (map control) early wins the day, not turrets. The only exception to the rule is the Necron who build their economy at their base in the form of power generators. However, even they need map control in order to field their armies. Their population and vehicle cap is tied directly to the number of completed listening posts (obelisks) they have built over strat.points and/or relics.Last edited by Braidedheadman; 04-28-2007 at 10:09 AM.

Ah I didn't realise you could place them anywhere in DC. I stick to the regular marines and I don't think I could get more than about 5 down. I'll try building additional strongholds next time.

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Who plays this?
A DC tip for the marines: Attach the Chaplin (new hero unit circa Winter Assault but included in DC) to your Grey Knights squads. That combination is absolutely monstrous and tears things up in melee, especially "daemon" class units. The Force Commander is also a great pairing when you want extra kick against daemons, though it comes at the cost of the Chaplin's ability to heal the squad... trade off between FC's battle cry for loony combat bonuses or healing. Tough call.

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Who plays this?
I'm almost done on the campaign. What I've done is put all the hero units in one squad. Once you have a pair of honour guard terminators with cannon upgrade, many of the maps are winnable on the hero units alone.
