Launch Server?

Based off the initial list, we have a choice of 2.

Two.

One....Two.

hmmmm.......

Orion or Cassiopeia.

I'm thinking there will be more come launch day, but then again, maybe not. Based off of those, my initial pick is Orion but I'm open to either.

I know the desire usually is to get on the lowest populated server, but I think just about everyone thinks that way as well. Most times the trend is to pick the least appealing name and go to that server. Which can backfire if the majority of people looking for a home are thinking the same way you are. I've seen it happen, and it's not pretty.

So what's our launch day strat going to be? IMO, one of our biggest decisions before launch will be what server we're going to call home because it will dictate so many other things over the course of our stay there.

Do we go with the name option? Or do we pick a random number based off the server list and go there regardless of the name? Or some other option that anyone can think of? Just want to have it ironed out before hand so we all create on the same one and hit the ground running. Would suck to chose the wrong one and not get the name you want or lose time having to start over on another server.

Thoughts?

Re: Launch Server?

There will be more, those are just the Beta servers. They will likely not even exist on launch.

I say go with the sexiest name.

Re: Launch Server?

I say go with the lowest population one come 5 pm PST 10/30. Problem with this is, many of us will be in-game well before then and itching to start the guild (1201 CST 10/30). If we can execute some patience, we'll get on the right server. i.e. the one with the least lag. I kinda dont want to wait till 5pm to build a character though, but if it means a smoother release for TG... I'd do it. So will everyone else? Doubtful... hehe

Likely, we'll just pick the server once they release the names (which hopefully will be soon). Whichever is on the middle or bottom of the list is where we should go. NEVER the 1st server on the list (no matter how cool the name is).

Re: Launch Server?

Well I'd like to have the server picked by the launch of the pre-order headstart. Since the last name is so important in this game, I think there's going to be a mad scramble to grab the one you want, so waiting really isn't a good option.

Especially if you are set on a more "common" name. However, if that's what it takes to get us all on the same server, then I'm with Gambit and willing to wait. (as much as it would kill me.)

Regardless though, if NCSoft follows their pattern with CoH, the server list should be released well before the headstart and all this will be moot.

Good point about it being moot. Technically, MANY in the pre-order headstart will choose their servers ahead of time and it'll be hard to tell how the server pops are going for a while. Probably just gonna have to pick a pray.

Waiting would be the smartest thing, but it's REALLY tough keeping people from logging in as soon as they're able. Then, they'd have to start over from scratch to switch to the clan server.

Compromise: choose the server ahead of time and if it sucks at 5 p.m. PST on 10/30 then we'll make a clan announcement that we're switching. How's that?

I'm down with that. Or another option would be to pick two servers. Our main and an alt, just in case we find that the population on our main server isn't what we'd hoped.

It doesn't take but 2 seconds to grab your name due to the fact that you don't have to worry about losing it after you get it the first time. So it would be pretty easy to create a character on two servers and cover all our bases.

Great idea...
See, this is why forums rock.

Done deal... now, where's those server names?

Current Server List

This list was actually generated last week. It does represent the available servers for launch (not just beta), although there are other servers available for the Devs to use if needed. They also, of course, will be based on constellations. I think it'll be a given that they'll need more then 4 servers for release.

-Orion (West Coast)
-Cassiopeia (West Coast)
-Pegasus (East Coast)
-Test Server (East Coast)

EU Server and location
-Centaurus (Germany)

So, we need to decide which 2 servers will be our initial focus. Of course, Pegasus is somewhat of a given... but, seeing as how many EU people will play on Pegasus, there's a chance it could overload fairly quickly. The plus is, we have MANY Euro TGers, and it'd be beneficial to them for TG to be on an EST server.

So, I'm leaning towards Pegasus and Cassiopeia being our choices, in that order. I'd choose Orion ('cause I like the name), but it's the 1st server on the list and will most likely be the most heavily populated.

None of this will be set in stone until release day and we get a look at the TRUE server availability.

Re: Launch Server?

If those are the ones we have to work with at launch, then I'm in total agreement with you as far as choices go.

Now we just have to wait....and wait....I've been holding off playing because I wanted the game to seem fresh again, but I think I'm going to have to hop in before the wipe and get my TR fix.

Re: Launch Server?

I dont have much say. I just found this place after talking to Gambit7 on the TR forums....but I and my small guild will be playing on Pegasus.

If you all end up playing there I'll look forward to doing some stuff together on occasion.

That's what TG is for... community. We wont exclude you just because you're already in a Clan. As long as our rules (which are pretty lax) are upheld.

Re: Launch Server?

West coast attracts funny Australians =) I don't know how ping sensitive this game is going to be, since it seems to have some FPS-like characteristics. I'd probably be ok on an east coast server with cable. My concern would be that east would be highly popped with US + UK players. If we have lots of UK players interested then that's a plus, but if we don't then it's a minus.

That's why Cassiopeia was the 2nd choice, by a hair. Orion's gonna be the worst of all of them really with the West Coast having the lion's share of the market. Plus, they have the pacific market to deal with (asia, japan, etc.)

You also have to remember, there is a separate EU server so MOST Euros will be playing there. An EST server is a benefit mostly just because of the EU peeps we have here at TG. I DO know a lot of UK people play on EST servers anyways though, like you said.

Why they dont have Central servers is beyond me really. Kinda dumb. Though, WoW went through issues when literally every guild signed up on Central-time servers... basically overloading all of them. Perhaps NCSoft are trying to avoid a similar scenario.

Sloppy, if you're real concerned about it I actually played the entire beta on a West Coast server with little to no lag (and I'm in Miami). Pings were around 200. A lot depended on which instance I was in though. Another benefit to TR is that it's still NOT an FPS, so it's not as ping sensitive. There are still hidden "turns" and "dicerolls" for every action.

We'll just have to wait and see. I'll be checking all the servers though for curiousity's sake.
