Naming rights...

Have to say that since early Beta, one of the main topics of contention at TR has been how they handle character names.

Personally, I'm in a love/hate relationship with how TR is going to handle things. For those that don't know, your LAST name will carry over to every character you make and once you choose it, it is yours FOREVER. Even if you delete every single one of your characters, you still have to keep the same last name.

Now having said that, you're basically going to be known by your last name. I realize that most people are used to Callsigns or only having one name, so this is a different take on things, especially since the same last name is on every character you create.

Where it get's tricky is when/if you want to keep a name that matches your usual callsign. I've been Nemesis since forever, but as a last name......not really sure.

Jim Nemesis? Just doesn't roll off the tongue does it?

However, TR tries to balance things out by only having your last name appear in any chat messages. So, Jim Nemesis will only show up as "Nemesis" during any conversation. So should it even be an issue if your last name/callsign doesn't really fit as a "typical" last name?

Or is this rule enough to make you go with something more fitting to a person's last name?

Just some things to consider before you hop on those shiny new launch servers and choose a last name. It just may have a greater impact in this game than most any other MMO you've played up to this point.

Re: Naming rights...

You can take my approach and make your name "descriptive" rather then a proper noun. That is, your first name an adjective... your last name a noun.

As you know... my main toon was "Liquid Ghambit". Technically, it's just a two-part nickname, but I thought it sounded pretty cool. Yah Yah, one of my fav. games was Metal Gear: Solid. Anyways, successive Clones were all named similarly.. "Solid Ghambit," "Explosive Ghambit," etc.

If you want to keep your TG name... that's the best way to do it. In YOUR case (nemesis), maybe it could be "Trojan Nemesis" or something (if you were making a Spy). You could even use adverbs like "Skulking Nemesis" or something like that.

The other way is to make your first name your "nickname" and give yourself a proper last name... "Ghambit Saunders" for instance . "Nemesis McDougle" sounds kinda cool.

-my 2 cents

Re: Naming rights...

And your money is always welcome here bro.

I've thought about using my "nickname" as the first name, but with how TR handles things, you're really going to become known by your last name. So it kind of defeats the purpose, IMO.

Honestly, I'm not adverse to using something new for my character, but it's hard to break a long time attachment if the name is available to me.

As a side note, Metal Gear: Solid is still one of the greatest games ever made. So I appreciate your naming logic. I'll see if I can use it to my own advantage.

Re: Naming rights...

I guess most if not everyone here is against using their real name an I understand that. I would rather be called westy westyfield than use my real name in a multiplayer game, but I was wondering if this whole surname thing is going to mean that a lot more people are going to use their real names?
If I get this game (I doubt it) I would probably use westyfield as my last name and use something random as my first name. I'm guessing that noone can have the same surname in this game, but what about first names. Some names like 0wnage or stuff like that will probably go pretty quickly.

Thats my £0.01
(haha, exchange rates!)

Re: Naming rights...

Westy, first names aren't locked so you could have a thousand "Bob's or John's" running around. It's the last name will is unique and can't be used by anyone else.

Not sure about people using their real names...I wouldn't go that route either, but I'm sure some will without question.

Sorry to hear that you won't be getting the game. Anything in particular that turned you off towards it?

I guess the main reason I probably wont be getting it is that it looks too good. I might get totally hooked on playing and that would just be weird. Also, I'm more of a FPS player than RPGs. And with all sorts of games coming out (Call of Duty 4, Orange box, Crysis) I'll probably be pretty busy. Thanks for the info though.
