    Class watching...

From looking at the recent applications, the last 4 seem to want to play sniper/spy. That's all well and good, but I really think we need to watch that we don't get overloaded on any particular class.

From my experience, it can only lead to bad things from a party perspective. No one likes to get left out because the clan has X number of Y class and a party really only needs 1 or 2. Of course, the game is new and at this point, we really don't know how group dynamics are going to effect leveling/instancing. Hell, a group of 5 spies may be the UBERNESS.

But that usually isn't the case. So to all new applicants, please keep your class considerations in mind when applying.

I'll post up a new thread where everyone can list their classes/expected classes. Please realize that nothing is set in stone and by listing your class, it doesn't lock you into to anything. Everyone is welcome to change and play the class they consider the most fun. But I think there is going to quickly come a time when we have to seriously take class selection into account in regards to bringing in new members.

    Thoughts?

    Re: Class watching...

I actually thought about this today. I'd comment yay or nay, but I am entirely unsure how classes come into play in the late endgame. I heard somewhere that Destination Games designed TR so that there are no classical "class roles" needed anywhere and that any squad is a viable squad.

However, I'm entirely sure that PvP is a different story. For now, I propose we keep our open-door policy on all classes as we slowly begin to trickle into our clan identity.

You also have to remember that Cloning makes it extremely easy to shift to another skill tree. In most MMOs it's a big deal because you'd have to re-roll an entirely new character, not-so with TR. Granted, it's a long haul from lvl 15 to lvl 30.

My advice is just to compel soldiers to play their commandos rather then playing their rangers so much. Makes no sense to stop people from joining entirely.

Nevertheless, we do have too many spy/snipers IMO.

Those'll be the most popular classes in these beginning days. Can't get around it.

The stigma of sniper (even though snipers are not the "one shot, one kill" that the new players are thinking) is present in every game that has the opportunity to be one. And spies... well, they have the sneaky backstab thing going on. If you've played WoW, then you know that rogues far outweighed other classes at one time (probably still do... although I haven't bothered with WoW in ages).

In fact... I think the guys going Sniper are going to be disappointed. They have a lot of support abilities and seemed to be geared towards a role in which they support and enhance the damage abilities of the rest of a squad.

If one wants to be a damage-giving mob-pwning god, they should look into Grenadier.

Well, one of the reasons I was going the Spy/Sniper route was because the initial poll of our members seemed to show a large amount going Commando/Gren/Guard. So I wanted to diversify our options.

However, if it looks like we're going the opposite way on the soldier tree, then I'm in a perfect position, character wise, to change gears and go either Guardian or Grenadier.

I'd be happy with any of the Soldier choices so it's all about what's best for the Guild at this point.

    Re: Class watching...

Game is all of 4 days old and already we're having class-balance issues. heheheh. I dont think anyone really needs to worry about it at this point. Right now, clan participation is the biggest issue. We're lucky if 5 of us are on at one time.

I tend to not really pay much credence to new-game/clan balance because the majority of the time people just put the game down entirely because they get bored, dont like it, or dont want to commit the time. And in the end you end up with a clan that actually has NOTHING of something you previously had too many of.

This exact thing happened with the TG-WoW guild. In the BEGINNING they were mage-heavy, then over-balanced and became mage-light (which is why I rolled a mage)... then they became mage heavy again. LoL

Nemesis, if you wanted to play Commando from the get-go... by all means, play Commando.

Technically, TG-TR isnt big enough yet to cry unbalanced.

    Re: Class watching...

My main is a spy but I kinda wish I had gone commando again (had a 23 commando in beta). It really seems like spy is more of a PvE class than pvp despite having the sword and 'backstab' damage bonus. Stealth armor is worthless in pvp but is pretty much required as a spy. There's no ability to make us actually invisible, it only works against enemy mobs by reducing the range they aggro at. Now that I'm 30 I plan to start working on my secondary character which I'm either going to take my 15 clone down the commando route or start over with a specialist.

While I agree that the classes can't be classified as mage or healer types, I do think that we should be careful of having a 10 sniper + 1 engineer type of situation. We'll definitely need to have a diversity of classes for PvP situations.

    Re: Class watching...

Gambit, don't worry, I'm not freaking out or anything over here and I'm not saying anything because I think there's a major issue with the guild class structure.

I also realize that the game is just getting started and a ton can change over the next few months, however I'm one that believes in planning for the future. I know that the option to clone takes away a lot of the "grind" aspect if you want to try different characters but it's always nice to have an up to date idea of what people want to play or are thinking of playing.

That way, if someone see's that we only have one doctor type out of a group of 20 people, they might be more interested in trying it out sooner, rather than later.

Maybe my initial post came off the wrong way, but I'm not really worried about things as they stand, I'm just trying to give people an idea of how we are looking at this point. Who knows, it might help make someones final class decision just a little bit easier.

    Re: Class watching...

Another thing is... i'm seeing a lot of worrying with regards to PvP. For now, screw PvP. It's not even really a system worth speccing for. All you get currently is an arbitrary ranking and that's it (and I dont like the way they rank clans right now either). You cant loot corpses, there are no PvP rewards, and no territory is won or lost. This is why most Clans arent paying it much mind until endgame.

Regardless, Snipers DO have PvP specs they can use and certain tactics to properly implement them. I wouldnt go as far as saying they suck for PvP. Gimme a torqueshell at 80m and TG-tactics and more times then not my opponent will be dead if I see him first. Called Shot, target painting, crit wave, rage and polarity field = dead nme. And this is before you whip out the reinforcements.

You get hit, flip out the net gun and run..

Spies can pump 5 polarity field (for physical vulnerability), pop a magnesium flash, and then wtfpwn people with their blades. Use the net-gun to keep the prey nice and still.

A smart ranger will always take pump 3 reinf. at least, so they get a medic to back them up. How powerful is that btw?

Hell, every time I look at the spy/sniper skillset I just about create one myself.
