WeGame.com -- Youtube meets FRAPS
Are you a youtube junkie but have difficulty finding those great videos about games? Are you interested in recording your in-game action sequences but lack the technical skill to convert FRAPS recordings or simply don't want to pay for FRAPS?
Well look no further! A new online service has hit the interweb called WeGame. You could say that WeGame is simply a youtube for gaming. You could say that WeGame is another FRAPS utility. You would be right... and wrong! WeGame offers the best of both worlds. WeGame.com provides an online service for gamers such as yourself to upload videos that we gamers are interested in seeing. To make this process easier for the average gamer, WeGame has created an application that runs in the background to easily record the live action while you play. The application records your video in the format and size necessary for WeGame.com. And when you're done recording the amazing teamwork and intense action of Tactical Gamer servers, you can quickly upload those videos to WeGame with the click of a button.
That's right! It's as simple as a few clicks. The only downside is WeGame will not make your ugly mug look any prettier online, nor will it trim those few extra pounds you've gained from eating pizza and guzzling the latest energy drink while gaming for a twelve hour marathon. But don't fret, WeGame is still in the beta stages and there's always the chance of a miracle.
Desktop Application
WeGame is free, unlike FRAPS, and is constantly being updated to provide you with the smallest memory footprint and ensure that there is minimal impact to those precious frames-per-second that can be detrimental to game-play. WeGame currently runs on Windows XP & Vista.
The application does create a .avi file that should make it easier for users to edit with applications like Microsoft Movie Maker, Vegas, etc.
The minimum system requirements are:
1GB RAM
15 MB hard drive space for installation
2GB free space for recorded videos
The recommended system specifications are:
AMD or Intel Dual Core CPU
2 GB RAM
15 MB hard drive space for installation
5 GB free space for recorded videos
At this time I am without a gaming rig to perform an evaluation of the desktop utility, however we'll be getting a review of that up shortly from another member of Tactical Gamer.
The Site... The Service... WeGame.com
The WeGame website is what you would expect out of a video service. You can upload and watch gaming videos. Simply create a free account, download the utility and you're ready to be a gaming video producer. You can even upload videos without using the provided desktop application by browsing to the Upload page of the website. Each video is limited to 10 minutes and 100MB and must be in the following formats: avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .mov. Support for the .wav format will be coming soon.
When you upload a game it will end up in one or more "Channels". Each game title has it's own channel so you can narrow your selection of videos down by game. It's a great way to view all of those Call of Duty 4 moments! If you stumble upon a great video and you want to see more videos from the creator, you can also click on the user's name to view the user's own channel.
At this time the desktop utility supports most DirectX games. However, game titled channels have been created for all game titles and users have the capability of uploading videos directly to these channels. If you don't see a game channel that you'd like, simply submit the request to WeGame and they'd be happy to add the channel.
Once a video is online, you can embed this video into your website. More importantly, you can embed those videos into your Tactical Gamer posts! No more just writing about those great gaming experiences. Show us your great gaming experiences!
Down the Road
As I mentioned earlier, WeGame is still in beta and does not have all the features to make this a truly great social networking gaming video service. Some features to be expected at a WeGame.com near you include Groups and RSS feeds. The groups feature will allow multiple WeGame.com users to group their videos together and the RSS feeds will allow users to subscribe to channels and groups to keep informed of the latest and greatest videos to hit the WeGame universe.
I know you're thinking it would be great to have a Tactical Gamer group where all of us Tactical Gamer's can submit videos to and have them fed back into TacticalGamer.com. Well that brings me too....
Tactical Gamer @ WeGame
Tactical Gamer has been in contact with the powers that be at WeGame.com to utilize their service. WeGame is planning to roll out their new Groups feature soon (as in within the next few weeks) and has need of testing. Tactical Gamer has been selected as one of the bodies to help test this new feature. Tactical Gamer will become a featured channel on WeGame and our logo added to their (yet to be released) Partner's page. That's exciting news for Tactical Gamer to help get our community recognized as the Premiere mature gaming community! But to do this, we'll need your help.
Your involvement is simple. Download the free application and start recording your in-game action. That's not that hard, now was it. When the Groups feature is made available you can start uploading your videos to the Tactical Gamer group.
We know you're itching to get your action sequences online. Since the Groups feature is not available yet, Tactical Gamer has created our very own
Tactical Gamer user account / channel. If you do start recording videos and would like them as part of the Tactical Gamer community, simply contact me and we'll get your video uploaded to the Tactical Gamer channel. Users are still more than welcome to upload the videos to their own user account, however it would be great to start flooding the Tactical Gamer channel with quality action-packed, teamwork videos of your favorite game.
