What's ironic is that those that most misuse the word "tactical" often prefer to eschew human opponents altogether and play against bots.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but if you're playing against AI you've got no leg to stand on in asserting your "tactical" superiority, by any definition of the word "tactical".

I find it odd that despite the availability of "something for everyone" people still take issue with games being played the way they don't like, even if it does not affect their gameplay. Often we have multiple servers running a different rule set to cater to different styles of play. In most cases, it is the more sim oriented players that take exception to action oriented players playing the same game on a different server.

The kind of thinking that despises one group for enjoying their recreation in a manner that is different, but in no direct way degrades your own experience is not useful. The only solution proposed by the extreme side of the hardcore gaming is trash any game that isn't classed a sim. Tell everyone they can either enjoy outdated games or hit the door. I don't think that is productive at all. Especially with all the potential around here. If classic rainbow 6, graw, or SWAT games are really that good then hosting a server wouldn't be an issue. The players who enjoy them the most would be playing them now instead of BF2 or COD4. If the BF2, COD4, TF2, etc servers were shutdown tomorrow, the SWAT4,GR2, or ArmA servers are not going to be full by the afternoon.

I find it odd that I keep seeing disagreements to arguments that aren't there. I don't think anyone in this thread said anything about kicking out players or shutting down any server, action oriented or otherwise. What I said was keep the action gameplay in the action style games, and keep tactical (or realistic if you prefer) gameplay in the realistic games. Also, The game I mostly play here is Project Reality. It is a BF2 mod and is probably the most realistic game here at TG besides ArmA. But the problem is players playing games like PR and playing like it's vanilla BF2. It doesn't happen all the time, but enough that someone has some sort of bad experience about every other round. Granted a lot of our maps last over 2 hours, so maybe that's not that bad but it's certainly not how it used to be here at TG.

Also, I don't think anyone is suggesting we run outdated games. I just left the GsTA clan because they only wanted to play the original GR. It kills a clan or other gaming community to play outdated games because no one new joins. Who wants to play a game that isn't even sold anymore anyway? Lol.

All I and others have been saying is that the TG world is changing and growing and some of it is great but as it grows, there needs to be a lot of focus on keeping everything in line. Too much foolishness seems to be slipping through the cracks and I at least think we can do more to keep the players playing by the rules. It's not a us vs them situation. It's a TG vs players from the general public and the occasional TG player who should know better situation.

EDIT: at any rate, I have more than said my piece on this matter. For those willing to look at another point of view, I think what I have said bears some merit, for those who only want to see what they want to see, it doesn't really matter anyway. If anyone has any questions or concerns on my point of view, PM me. I don't think I'll post in this thread again because it seems pretty pointless.

Just skimming the thread, and noticed the disagreement about the term "tactical". Some are suggesting that it means realistic. TG hosts TF2, ETQW and WoW, hardly games that model reality in any way.

To me, "tactical" (and the reason I play here) means focus on teamwork and coordination. On servers run by others, doing what the team wants is often met with derision. Here, such derision is likely to get one kicked.

Great discussion here!

I am a new member so I do not have the experience and knowledge of the past here on TG.

I also like the simulation / reality / tactical games.

I also like BF2 and BF2142. These are more action oriented games.

But we can play them as real as we can, and probably bypass the developers "action" elements at some level.

This can be done by having rules, SOP's and IHS that enforce, educate and spread the "simulation / reality / tactical" words, leading by example on the servers and forums.

Add to the above mix the admins, they "police" the servers and forums, and I believe we can have a better gaming environment.

I am "old-school" gamer.

I was playing SWAT, Hidden & Dangerous, GR, Rainbow SIX, Flashpoint, etc.

I play now BF2142 and sometimes BF2 (POE/PR).

What I do not like in BF2142 is that there is less "reallity".

As TG members we can try to change this.

How?

By joining an IHS, so we can enforce the tactical and reallity elements of our gameplay.

By creating an IHS that plays only sim / reality games, in the way we like it.

By posting "tactical" and "reality" gaming issues on forums.

By creating events with special rules that enforce tactics and reality.

By promoting TGU.

And many more, it is just upon our imagination and initiative.

A community is made by members. Community change as members change.

We are part the driving force here (the other part is TG Officers), and we can change the way the ship is going to some extend.

Here comes the "What WE can do for TG".

We also have the "What TG can do for you" as we pay for membership.
For that case, we can:

Demand new games, mods and servers.
Demand more admins to be on-line and police the action.
Demand rules and SOP additions and changes.
Demand the enforcement of rules and SOPs by the server admins.
Demand that all TG members (SM or Non-SM) take a mandatory TGU "TG Orientation" course.
Demand better response times from the Ribbons account

And more things like that.

And as many on this thread said, it is the members that needed to follow the rules and SOPs.

We should find new ways to communicate, educate and finally enforce the TG style of play in all games (sim / reality / tactical / action).

It is up to us.

Well what’s to comment on here, I would just like to say, as one of the newer guys to TG as a supporting member.

I in my own experience disagree with some of your comments Magnum, I think the PR, POE, & COD4 servers are running in the TG tradition, of course you are going to get players that don't play in a TG fashion, but I can assure you, in my experience, the Game Admins on all the named servers mentioned above, do not tolerate, run and gun tactics, there is only so much Team play tactics that can be used in the mentioned games, as there are objectives to achieve, saying that there is always something new to learn, and I thank the Game Admins for their advice.
Is it not true, after all we are all here to play a team co-ordinated mature game; fun is what it's all about?
I myself have had slight problems on some of the TS and game servers, always have I found game Admins, understanding to my cause, knowledgeable in reaching a resolve to my problem, Magnum first of all I have no personal experience in your presence Sir, but “I resent you comments towards the Admins” sometimes as I have learnt, unless you take your grievances up with certain individuals, it is sometimes better not to comment, I for one admire the Game Admins, for their dedication, and time volunteered, knowledge, and experience, without them this community wouldn’t be what it is today, so please with respect, vent your frustrations to those concerned, not the Admins globally.

This comment was made by you, what gives you the right to make a comment like this, speaking for myself, I have much to offer TG, when the time is rite I will approach those concerned to offer my services, so please accept, I again resent the comment you made.
Is this comment not a contradiction of the word community, thus being a group of individuals, with their own ideas? “You cannot speak for everyone”
To sum up, I respect you for what you have done for the community, but change is something we all have to accept, whether it is right or wrong, and only as a community can we move forward.

My observations....

The crowd that frequents BF2142 is far more open and friendly toward the public. 2142 also tends to be a little bit more "fantastical" (is that a word?) and as such maybe that group does not take themselves quite so seriously.

The POE group tends to be a little bit more uptight and at times hostile. I've been berated for getting a squad lead killed because they had to "key it up to give me an instruction" and got killed because I distracted them. Whatever....

The PR bunch.... uhhh... dudes... take a pill. If a admitted n00b joins a squad and is a complete dope for a round while they figure things out. Deal with it. Don't berate them. I have witnessed this and can only imagine that it resulted in one less new player for the future.

The ARMA crowd deserves a medal for patience, teamwork and understanding. 'Nuff said.
