Age of Conan at Tactical Gamer!

Tactical Gamer Presents - Age Of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.
— Robert E. Howard, The Phoenix of the Sword 1932

Greetings from Hyboria, the world of Conan! Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is an MMO based on the writings of the early 20th century fantasy author Robert E. Howard. The developer Funcom has done an outstanding job of recreating Howard’s vision of a brutal, dark and violent world. This low fantasy MMO is unlike any currently on the market: no elves, no dwarfs, no clown suits, no flying mounts or spaceships. What you will find is an MMO that is true to its source material: adult themes like nudity, prostitution, brutal combat, decapitations, blood splattering, savage beasts and creatures. Age of Conan is the first mature-rated MMO game. However, the game is much more than an M rating as it has many features that are unique to an MMO:

-Real-time combat system.

Gone are the days of the auto attack. Tired of pressing one key, walking away from the monitor for a break, returning to still see your character attacking? Then the real-time combat system is for you. In Age of Conan you control your characters attack movements directionally in real-time. There is a purpose to your swing as your opponents have directionally virtual “shielding” which enables them to counter your attack swing. Directional attack swings coupled with your opponents virtual “shielding” always keep the combat interesting as defeating an opponent is largely based on player skill. Additionally, by using your hot bar keys in conjunction with your directionally swings you can perform “fatalities” which is a pleasant way of saying you can decapitate or rip your heart out of your opponent!

-Player Built Cities

Tactical Gamer prides itself on team work and Age of Conan provides lots of opportunity for team play. Perhaps the best example of this is the player built city. Player built cities require tremendous resources to build and takes a well organized Guild to defend. Individual players contribute to the overall success of the City by gathering resources and donating coinage. Players can use their specific crafting professions (architect for example) to build structures (gate keeps, trading posts, etc). Beyond the building of a City is the defense. Player built cities can be attacked by other Guilds and NPC’s. Defending, building and maintaining a city takes a cohesive group of players to accomplish.

-Mounts and Mounted Combat.

Age of Conan has some unique features which make mounts more than just getting from point to point. You will not be riding any purple dragons or white stripped tigers. Instead, you'll be stomping around Hyboria on a War Mammoth, War Rhino or Horse. The developers have done an excellent job of not only keeping the mounts lore-appropriate but unique to other MMO’s. First, the mounts (like the rest of the game) are highly detailed: the War Mammoth has head armor, bloodied tusks adorned with spikes, the War Rhino has packs, saddle and the Horse fur looks like Horse fur. The animation only adds to the realism: your character climbs on and off your mount, the fur moves and sways, the hip joints move back and forth like you’d find on a real animal as does all the movements. Secondly, the mounted combat allows player to use their mount as a weapon. The War Mammoth can swing its tusks to do damage, the War Rhino its horn and the horse frontal and backward kicks. You are also able to attack while mounted. Make a pass with your horse, unsheathe your weapon and take a swing!

-Interesting and Varied World.

Each area of the game is not only highly detailed but varied and unique. From the jungles of Tortage to the enormous Egilophian Mountains and onto the Stygian desert you will feel as you are traveling to different areas of Hyboria. Like the Mounts, the level of detail of each region is unlike any MMO. No two areas look the same: the jungles of Tortage are lush and green while Stygia is a high desert and Field of the Dead is cold and damp. Besides the varied regions of the game the small details add to the overall experience: armor has dents and scratches, wildlife roams the cities and countryside, trout populate the streams, foliage is region specific, the War Mammoth’s fur moves, Pacts (enemies) have bones for necklaces, plus too many more details to mention. Though you need a pretty sweet rig to run all the bells and whistles the game still looks great on a variety of settings. DX10 Should be implemented by late summer.

Currently, Tactical Gamer is supporting three Guilds which are known collectively as the Alliance: Ars Tactika, Lions of Tybor and Syndicus. Though each Guild may approach the game differently we play in a cooperative spirit where the main goal is to have fun. Details of each Guild can be found within the Tactical Gamer forums.

Re: Age of Conan at Tactical Gamer!

Thanks to Whistler for putting this front and center. I think I can speak for all the Age of Conan players here at TG and say we are enjoying ourselves playing the game. Personally, it's my first MMO and I'm learning alot and having a good time. It's nice to be playing with an experienced group of MMO players here at TG.

If anyone would like to try the game we currently have buddy passes available. PM myself and I'll be more than happy to try and get you a pass.

However you want to word it, it's pretty damn cool!

Re: Age of Conan at Tactical Gamer!

Is there a demo someplace? Paying $65 just to see if it is any good is a bit steep.

Re: Age of Conan at Tactical Gamer!

No demo, but buddy keys have been activated. I'm sure lots of people at TG still have a buddy key to give out and this will give you a 7 day trial.

The only catch is if you don't get someone to send you the discs, you'll end up paying around 2.95 to download it through funcom.

Re: Age of Conan at Tactical Gamer!

Yep. A good place to request one/ get on, is here.
You get 3 extra days if you download it.. takes a while though, and you can't make it go slow(Full speed, kills internet all the time).. which sucks. So I just turn it on at night.

Edit: Silly me, found how to turn it down. http://funcom.solidstatenetworks.com/about/

No, but you're more than welcome to start a Euro-TG guild. We'll pop a channel in TS for you guys and of course you can use the forums.

I've seen people have success with playing on the US servers by DLing the game btw... instead of buying a Euro retail box.

One class that I know of, the Herald of Xotli, has the combo "I Eat Your Heart" - nice bloody scene tearing out the heart and taking a bite while the victim is still watching.

Re: Age of Conan at Tactical Gamer!

I'm bumping up this News thread because the game has come quite a long way since release. I'm also doing this to throw out a call to all TGers to support your TG guild on Cimmeria server (Ars Tactika). Our numbers have dwindled since the dissolution of Syndicus and Lions of Tybor TG guilds, so we need to refill the ranks. If we dont get more numbers then TG will drop AoC entirely and IMO that'd be a mistake.

I'm still of the opinion AoC is a quality product and will only get better and better. Unlike other games, Funcom has a clear upgrade path going on and they've shown they can deliver. Many enhancements are just waiting "finishing touches" and will go live relatively soon... like the DX10 client (hopefully by the end of the month) and the revamped PvP system (next week). The latter 2 elements basically change the entire game and it's worth a look just to experience it.

Well before the end of the year a whole new zone (Ymir's Pass) will also go online along with a new region inside Tarantia (the slums). Early next year an entire new expansion will be released.

Every patch usually includes new and/or improved quests as well. Recently, Eiglophian mountains saw a huge influx of quests; along with totally revamped and new quests in the lower lvl areas. So the game as it stands now has absolutely little to no grinding if played through the entire storyline. All major questlines now have voice-overs as well.

As for endgame, the new PvP system next week will bring about a brand new and improved siege system along with activation of the PvP reward system and the Mercenary and Fugitive systems. Balance tweaks will make PvE dungeon gear more logical to acquire so we'll start seeing more effort between guilds to complete them.

Right now the biggest issue is getting guilds organized to tackle these very difficult PvE dungeons since many like us are suffering in numbers. Both PvP and PvE elements fall prey to this difficulty.

It was thought originally that AoC would be a great game for TG, but for one reason or another many people have lost the requisite patience required for a game of this mass. We need you folks back and we need more support from those of you who have yet to try it out. The eventual goal is getting to a point where casual teamplay-oriented endgame raiding and pvp is a reality. Once we achieve this critical mass, it'll be easier to schedule events for people to participate in within their daily lives - AoC is the perfect game for this type of play... since it doesnt demand the amount of timesink a game like WoW or WAR does.

So give it a shot! We could use the support. And like all games, playing it with TG folks makes it all the more fun.

p.s.
I have a few free trials remaining for those interested in trying it out. Hint: right now would be a great time to do-so.

For those coming ingame, here's our info:
Guild: Ars Tactika
Server: Cimmeria (RP)
Main Officers: Nikitis, Xercos, Ophian

Come say "hi" in the AoC forum and TS channel.
