Thumbs up ACE Online - Review & Introduction.

The Basics: ACE Online is an action based MMORPG 3D enviroment shooter. In ACE, players can pilot their own fighters (Known as Gears), in a futuristic setting. Gamers have full control over their gear as where many other piloted MMOs used a point and click system. Most of the combat system is based on a near 3rd person shooting style with moments of 1st person shooting. There also appears to be an option of full 1st person shooting but its still in development. There are 2 warring factions to choose from and sets the basis of PvP combat.

Your Class Options: All Pilots have 4 choices of Gears to choose from. All playing out different combat roles in a dynamic combat system.
  • B-Gear - This gear is fitting to allow most types of upgrades from weapons to missiles and armor. The B-Gear is your general purpose fighter/attacker. Allowing it to preform all offensive and defensive roles including ground assault.
  • I-Gear - This gear is fitted with the latest weaponry and engine types to date. It's you straight up air-to-air dogfighter. Since this unit specialized in highspeed maneuvers, it tends to lack in the ability to take a hit, they rather out maneuver incoming missiles as their primary defense. They also lack in ground combat ability as they pick up no special bonuses compared to the B-Gear.
  • A-Gear - The Armor-Gear is the flying tank of the skies. This flying box truck can tank out damage and return it 2-fold. While being the slowest Gear, it picks up a very special ability to land and engage siege mode. Siege mode locks you into the ground and opens up your main cannon to FPS mode, mowing down targets that fly into your view.
  • M-Gear - This gear is your support craft. They are outfitted to take a good amount of damage and survive to keep your formation alive by resupplying and repairing ships in combat. They have the weakest attack but only slightly less then that of the B-Gear at mid to later levels.

My Review: The game is still in open Beta for anyone to join and there are a few bugs to work out that can cause lockups and crashes. Looking past the short-term issues the game works on a mission system to gain money and levels. The missions early on tend to be a bit redundant and gain some difficulty and dynamic. While I'm still playing the lower levels, there is a urge to see what else the game has in store. I will say, there is a huge potential for tactical PvP combat.

Best of all, It's free to play!
ACE Online

**Special thanks to LordMeatwad for finding this game!**

Re: ACE Online - Review & Introduction.

The writeup and screenshots makes it sound like it's exactly the same as another free "beta" MMO game that I played a while back, Space Cowboy. Including the naming of the "gears". Tell me, is this by Yedangsoft(or did they get a license for it from them?) Space Cowboy went down and out of beta last year, and now this game comes creeping up... odd.

Edit: After viewing a gameplay video, yes, this appears to be almost the same as Space Cowboy was, with some updated graphics. Some of the maps and statics look exactly the same, too.. And it's by Yedang and Masangsoft.

Edit2: after looking at wikipedia, it appears yes, it IS Space Cowboy.
The Gala-Net version of Space Cowboy Online, which services North America, was shut down on December 26, 2007 during normal weekly maintenance.[1] Complete details listed below. Yedang, the owner of all Ace Online's license, decide to run its servers themselves, as "Ace Online International" is officially for International players, with a single server, "Quasar", while Wicked Interactive hosts the North American servers, with new server named "Prelude".

Re: ACE Online - Review & Introduction.

heh, well who knew. I was introduced to this a few days ago by UnLoad and LordMeatwad. We all have hopes to draw in some fellow TGers and see how it fairs. Remake or not, we got about 7 TG players now and trying to get a subforum up so we can start taking about it.

Thanks for the info.

Re: ACE Online - Review & Introduction.

It is Space Cowboy. The reason SC went down was due to licensing issues with a company who refused to let them continue playing or something like that. So they renamed the game and have different servers now. But yes, it is Space Cowboy.

SC was a lot of fun. Great mindless time-killer. I might give it another go if there are some TG'ers playing.

I'm bored with my BF games and others, so I'll register this puppy while I'm waiting for Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2.

Are the controls joystick- or keyboard-friendly?

Re: ACE Online - Review & Introduction.

Great guys, thanks for the support. I'll be starting up a Brigrade in 6 days. I had to delted the current one that was named 3rdSFD. As I saw the potential to recuit other players I wanted to make it friendly for all TG players. The only catch is it takes 7 days for a brigrade to delete and allow you to make another. So get the friends list up and I'll add anyone that wishes to join.

My in-game name is Celes, my favorite character from the FF series.
