Many of you may recall a few months ago when we announced that Tactical Gamer was going to begin carrying various USENET feeds and integrating them into our forums. The concept was great, bringing in new content to the community and allowing our community members easy access to some of the USENET groups that are out there on the net.
Unfortunately, the amount of content that was brought into the forums became unmanageable and it severely limited the usefulness of the "New Posts" and new post count functions of the site. Users would be alerted that there were new posts yet end up inundated with the USENET content even if they had no interest in it. It also caused problems with our own RSS feed that some users tie into applications such as Trillian to alert them when new posts were made. As a result of these issues, Tactical Gamer dropped the USENET feeds completely.
Over the past several days I have been working behind the scenes to bring back that functionality to the Tactical Gamer community in a manner that is easier to manage.
I am pleased to present the new Tactical News site at
http://www.TacticalNews.com.
Tactical News is a very simple site and consists only of the forums software application and the back-end gateway software. Local forums on this site will be kept to a bare minimum, mostly relating to new group requests and support/Q&A type issues. Any posts made in the USENET feed groups will be propagated out to the Internet and carried by other USENET sites and NNTP servers.
This new site is devoted purely to acting as a "gateway" between USENET and our forum architecture. The new gateway even allows us to integrate mailing lists into the forums. Any user wishing to participate in the USENET discussions will need to make an account on the new site.
As of right now we are carrying several game and genre-related groups as well as the HLDS and HLDS_L mailing lists that are considered essential tools for Half-Life and Source server admins. More groups will be added over time.
