Re: Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 Comes to Tactical Gamer!

Whoa. I've been reading their forums, and this looks *incredibly* sweet. Tanks have historically correct ammo loadouts - meaning both HE and AP in the correct ammounts. HE and AP apparently also are modeled as having different flight characteristics, with different range scales on the sights.

And there are lots of other similar details too. I'm semi-tempted to reinstall UT2k4 and get the mod just to play around with some before the retail goes live. I did play it a few times in one of it's early versions, but it didn't like my video driver or something at the time and performed WAY worse than Vanilla UT2k4 so I never messed with it much. I could definitely tell though that it was much more realistic than DoD, so I'm really looking forward to the new version - especially since I'm a WW2 history / wargaming buff (and even built many of the tank models in the game in my youth).

It was kinda funny reading the forums about the tank ammo - apparently there will be some sort of re-supply which many were complaining about - they didn't want it to become BF2 with "supply crates" raining down lol. I think these will be at the rear areas where it takes several minutes to get there and back, so while not 100% realistic it doesn't sound anything like BF2. Hey, some gameplay concessions are going to have to be made, especially considering that 98% of the players for games like this aren't looking for hard-core realism like TG players tend to.

Oh, a quick TG RO question or 2 - any idea if we're going to be able to do reserved slots like on the BF2 servers? And how many servers are we going to have? I'm thinking with a 32-player limit, this may get full often, so having reserved slots for SM's would be nice - and having 2 servers might be even nicer - although we'll have to see what the demand is of course. If it looks like we're regularly pretty full, I think it'd definitely be a good idea to at least have some password nights like early on with BF2. I really see this one as becoming THE game to play here if it delivers on the promises, but I do have my obviously stated Eastern Front bias lol.

The ability to provision reserved slots is unknown at this point. It's going to depend on the engine and the ability for our various developers to work something into the mix. But it is something we certainly desire to be able to do.

When we launch, I may recommend to Strag to launch as a private server for the first couple days so our guys can get used to the game and we can work out any issues before it goes public. But that remains to be determined and will ultimately be up to what Strag feels is appropriate.

You can find a fabulous FAQ about Red Orchestra, written by our very own munchkin, here. As you can see, Red Orchestra is complex. We'll definitely need to evaluate this game and decide how best to provide the Tactical Gamer experience within its framework. I'm looking forward to it!

Last time I felt this way was for Soldner. What a let down.

Well this time around, it is built on a reliable engine (Unreal), and the gameplay seems to have been tested with a mod... So who knows, this might be the gem we're all looking for?

We can certainly report impressions, but we are restricted and can not post screenshots of the beta. That's too bad because.. Well.. The game is IMPRESSIVE.

I need some more time to try some specific functions in game. I also need to coordinate with the other TG folks in the closed beta so we can do some testing/trials with each other at the same time. After that point I think we'll be able to give you a better picture of what the game is all about.

In the meantime, I know this: pre-order it.

Re: Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 Comes to Tactical Gamer!

I noticed the system requirements for this game are kind of low, which made very happy, to say the least. To those testing it, is it true? According to what I've read, I can run the game at the reccomended specs... and I have a pretty low end pc.

Done and DONE. I believe it's 1.74 Gigs, so if you want to be there for opening night festivities, this isn't something to put off until the last minute...

Oh, speaking of opening night...is there going to be a FORMAL ceremony...jacket required? By that, I mean FLAK jacket, of course...

Yeah, I hate to say it but RO could put a pretty big dent in the BF2 numbers, at least for TG supporters. BF2 has filled a great void but RO looks to be the next level.

Heh, I was about done playing vanilla BF2, anyway, but this game will probably put the nail in the coffin. Sunday is Tactial Mod night, Monday is "Monday Night Mayhem", Tuesday is 1stMIP practice, and Wednesday is SF night. Fill in the extra time with Red Orchestra and/or BF2 Tactical Mod and vanilla BF2 pretty much gets squeezed from the schedule, though I seriously doubt server #1 is gonna be hurting for players anytime soon...
