Battlefield 2 Community Update

EA has just released a new community update for Battlefield 2, in this update we confirm a couple things that have been rumored including a new map and a fix for the "cartillery" aspects of dropping vehicles from aircraft. Aside from the new map, it seems to be a relatively routine update for Battlefield 2, although their is a slight departure from the norm with EA hosting an open beta of the new patch before it is officially released.

EA Community Update:

The launch of Battlefield 2: Armored Fury has started off with great success, the maps have been great and the new scout choppers are introducing a whole new style of game play. Not surprisingly, there has been a lot of support and approval from the American community. Playing in Alaska, fields and Operation Road Rage make these maps a great change up in play. We recognize that this has been a very trying time for everyone who enjoys Battlefield 2 and are putting forth every effort to improve upon the issues that are causing some players frustration. The DICE team has been reviewing player feedback gathered from forums, email, and the ranker server providers in an effort to provide the best possible step forward from 1.3. While this work has been highly focused on bug fixing the team has also managed to put some work towards new content.

Some groups have noticed the testing of a new map "Road to Jalalabad" being run on our test servers. This map will be included in our next patch release and is not part of a new booster pack. Some of the items on the change list for this next step are:
  • Reversion: Allowing unlocks on unranked servers
  • Fix/Reversion: We fixed the issue preventing mod teams from running multiple game modes in one map list.
  • Tuning: We have lowered the number of players needed to start a ranked game.
  • Tuning: We have made some modifications to the vehicle drop feature introduced in 1.3. These changes should reduce the overall impact of "cartillery" on game play.
  • Crash Fix: We have located and fixed a crash connected to 1.3.

These are only a small portion of the fixes being worked on for our next step. We would also like to announce that we will be holding an Open Beta in early July for this next patch. We will have public servers hosted, Beta files available on mirror sites, and specific threads for feedback during this Beta period hosted on the EA forums.

Open beta, I think they want to get this patch right. Maybe its the last patch for bf2 before 2142 comes out. What does "Reversion: Allowing unlocks on unranked servers" mean? Does it mean they are making it where even delisting private servers won't be able to use unlocks?

I think adding a new map for free will be pretty cool.

A server setting on the unranked server was, up until 1.3, to allow "global unlocks" on the server. That meant that players that earned unlocks on ranked servers could use those unlocks on ranked servers. While not necessarily important to TG's public servers, there were quite a number of clan players that relied on the unlocks in their matches. BF2 mod teams also wanted to use the unlock system to give players choices in weapons or to make some sort of "meta class." Starting with 1.3, "global unlocks" were disabled on unranked servers and those clan players and mods were left high and dry. That change made a lot of people very unhappy with DICE/EA, so it's good to see that they listened.

The "mixed game mode" fix is also important for mods, like PRMM. I know that they wanted to be able to run their extraction mode one map and AAS another and normal conquest the next. I'm not sure if that was something that was removed in 1.3 or just something that had been broken for a while. Either way, it's a good change to help out the mod teams.

o come on, everygame has troubles. This game i think got a bad name because it was so main stream, but atleast they are fixing the problems and tweaking it to make it better. And im not sure its dice that is causeing the problems.

You can't please eveyone in every game. It takes a while to iron out all the problems, no one is perfect. We don't live in a perfect world. I really would like to see DICE revamp the BF 1942 or make a completely new WW2 game with the BF2 engine.

forgotten hope is a WW2 mod for BF2, i think that will be a great mod along with so many other great mods that should be coming out sometime soon

Wanna see a game in beta? Check out GRAW. Compared to GRAW BF2's multiplayer code is a masterwork.
