Tactical Gamer News: Green Monster Edition

I'm not a card carrying member of the Nation, and you Boston folks know exactly what nation I mean. Yes, I've been to my share of games, but my life does not rise and fall on the fortunes of the team from Yawkee Way, you know?

One thing I do like about the Red Sox, however, is that they have a serious gamer on the roster: Curt Schilling.

So imagine my surprise when I came across Green Monster Games! Green Monster is a new game development studio fronted by Schilling, along with Todd McFarlane, and R.A. Salvatore.

No details on what the first title will be, but given that Curt is a big Everquest fan, Salvatore is a NYT bestselling fantasy author, and McFarlane is...well, McFarlane, you can guess where they are going. Gamasutra has a job listing for lead game developer, in case you are interested.

I order you all to go buy Schilling jerseys to show your support!

And now, for the rest of the news!

Game Industry News:
  • America's Army 2.7 Overmatch is now out. It's 2.4GB, so find yourself a fast server.
  • I guess noone told the Army that PC gamers are now niche.
  • Blizzard has licensed Havok for a Mac project? Somehow I don't think Burning Crusade needs ragdoll physics.
  • Microsoft shuts down the Halogen mod. An interview with the project lead, Dispraiser, is over on Game Set Watch.
  • Majesco titles Psychonauts, Bloodrayne, Bloodrayne 2, and Advent Rising will all be available via Steam. The Bloodrayne titles are available now, Psychonauts gets loaded in October.
  • Introversion also announced that Defcon and Uplink will join Darwinia on Steam. So many games, so little time.
  • BF2142 Beta is now over. Had to end sometime fellas.

Re: Tactical Gamer News: Green Monster Edition

Great info and I am stoked about this Green Monster developement. My favorite author is R.A Salvatore and the sports talk radio channel I listen to has Todd McFarlane on once a week and he is solid with his takes on all sports. Todd has a MLB.com show he hosts and is a part owner with the Edmonton Oilers plus his own business which does Spawn and sports figurines. I also think he is doing some stuff with HBO. Should be interesting.

A Warcraft or Starcraft first person shooter! That would absolutely rock. Didn't they talk about making a Starcraft shooter based on the Ghosts?

Starcraft:Ghost was cancelled about 6 months ago...the initial tech demos were less than well recieved. Makes you wonder if they are thinking about using what they had and improving upon it.

Actually, this is not the final version. This is the final .3x version. The reality mod team is planning to release v.4 in the next 4-6 weeks that is supposed to have a ton of new features and content.

"Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine, regardless of the level of advantage, if any, it gives over the opposing team." -- Tactical Gamer Primer

I'm sorry but this just saddens me. I suppose it could be a decent game, but if you're a fan of the shadowrun IP run by the original FASA and now owned by Wizkids and licensed to Fanpro, you'll be very confused sitting down with the X-box 360 FPS. It changes a ton of the world's rules and the way things work and it just feel likes fasastudios and microsoft are attempting to just cash in on the release of 4th edition last year of the PnP game.

It's a pity too because a long time ago a shadowrun PC game was supposed to be realeased, but around that time is when Microsoft bought out Fasastudios. They canned the project since it would compete against a project they were already running (and then they cnaceled that project too).

I think they are hoping to cash in on the RPG fanbase of shadowrun but a large number of SR's Pen and Paper fans are going to avoid this game like the plauge. Honestly, had this game been more like the shadowrun in the SNES and SEGA worlds as well as the Pen and Paper enviroment, I'd have bought a X-Box 360 just to play it.

Forgetting the world of shadowrun from the other incarnations, this game could be fun. It's a mix of magic and gunplay. Set in the first half of the 21st century, the game focuses on the return of magic to the world. The player can choose between playing humans, elves, dwarves, and trolls. Each race has their own advantages and disadvantages. I believe every player has a different level of magic (not too sure on that yet), which range from teleporting through walls to bringing back the dead.

I just can't see myself playing it though, even if it was extremly fun. I'm just too loyal to the theme in the RPG PnP books.
