For what it was, it went over well. Nice presentation and good participation by those involved. My only real comment would be that it was slanted (for obvious and completely understandable reasons) in the direction of the BFx series of games. This caused me to keep most of my comments to text, as the tactics, techniques, and procedures you use in ArmA are quite dramatically different from BFx.

With that being said, hopefully a lot of BFx players who were present at this session also show up at the "Intro to ArmA" TS session, whenever that may end up being. There's a lot of good stuff to talk about and I look forward to participating in it as well.

I agree, and it is more my fault than the module, as most of my comments were geared toward the BFx series simply because of my ignorance of ArmA. This will be rectified soon though.

Re: Feedback - Basic Infantry Class on TS

I have a 243 MB recording of the class as well that has part of the Roster and some of the after talk. However, as noted before, a lot is missing since a good deal of the conversation was held in channel comments.

Its 96 minutes long and I have no real way of hosting it to my knowledge -.-

Something that could be considered is maybe having people sign into a chat room for the session as well. That way comments could be made in the room and a recording of that could be taken and added to the voice recording.

A lot of good stuff was covered in the class and thanks to all involved that helped make it happen. This multi-game format really exposes some people to the differences in the games and acts as good PR for people who might be interested in expanding their gaming experiences.

Plenty of topics were covered and digested by all involved with different degrees of success. A few of them seemed a bit out of place in a basic infantry session in my opinion while others were glossed over. Which brings me to a good question.

Just what exactly is the basic infantry certification class supposed to accomplish?

Is it to cover basic skills? Is 'basic infantry' for 'advanced gamers'? Maybe because the only people we have interested in attending a class on basic infantry are people who have enough experience to have this down already.

If that's the case, why not just call it "Infantry" certification since there's rarely anything basic in it.
My sanity is not in question...
It was a confirmed casualty some time ago.

it was all very basic so how was there nothing basic in it :P

most people are just trying to brush up on their skills, renew knowledge, and get the badge to show people they have that knowledge..

From my point of view the Basic Infantry Course was just to get everyone on the same page. A primer for new players and a brush-up for more experienced players. A simple course designed to let everyone know the dos and dont's of operating in an infantry squad. It's a base of knowledge we should all know and exercise in game and use to build more advanced skills on in later courses and game experience. To put it simply, it was nice for smoothing out "noob-ness" in new players and bringing them over to the TG way of thinking and a reminder to veteran players of the basics. If TGU goes in the direction I am thinking with the advanced game-specific courses, we will see specific things such as how to move in different environments, the proper way to apply fire suppression, flanking manuvers, attacking fortified positions and such that will make this course seem VERY basic, lol. Just my .02

Re: Feedback - Basic Infantry Class on TS

As a primer its a great course to get people on the same page. However as 'basic infantry' it seems to slide around the topic as well.

I don't know. For me basic means basic. Things that you may eventually pick up and some protips you may never think about concerning those things. Something that will help you survive and contribute to your team.

Spotting, communication, basic movement, concealment, and environmental observation are all good basic topics.

Advanced movement formations seemed kinda out of place in that context. Odds are if you know basic movement then you can be ordered into an advanced formation and still be effective.

Something that wasn't covered at all that I consider very basic would be fire control and marksmanship. How do you handle small arms, SMGs, shotguns, large caliber assault rifles, small caliber assault rifles, and machine guns? The weapons may be different, but the principle should be the same between all the games.

    • Small Arms (sidearms) should be used as a last resort in short/medium range. Perferably after expending the rounds in your primary weapon and as an alternative to taking time in reloading that weapon.
    • SMGs are like automatic pistols and most effective in short/medium range. Aim centermass and let the bullets march upwards in short range, or fire in bursts towards the chest/head at medium range.
    • Shotguns are short range weapons only and you should hold your fire if you have the element of surprise until you reach the 'kill zone'. Once there fire center mass or high chest depending on the spread of your weapon and maybe fire 1-2 shots per enemy to ensure a kill.
    • Large Caliber Assault rifles typically have a slower RoF and a higher damage/recoil than Small Caliber Assault Rifles. Single shot or burst fire should be used in medium/long range and only resort to full auto in short range if the recoil won't matter.
    • Small Caliber Assault Rifles typically have a faster RoF, lower damage/recoil, and a larger magazine than LCARs. Full auto should be used in short/medium range with burst fire being utilized in Medium/long range. Its better to burst with SCARs at long range instead of using semi-automatic single shots because the lower recoil means you'll put more bullets into the target with a burst at range than with LCARs.
    • Machine guns of all kinds should be fired in bursts in order to not overheat the weapon and to sustain a longer amount of suppressive fire with the ammo avalible in the magazine. Aim centermass and let the bullets march upwards when targeting someone or aimed at and above their cover when applying suppressive fire. Try the fire at where you think they might pop up to return fire to make them think twice about doing so.
Meh...it seems like learning how to shoot in a First Person Shooter is a given, but reading the BF2142 boards its surprising how many people who visit us have to pick up and be instructed in how to use their weapon properly. A step away from 'spray and pray' is a step in the right direction I believe. Also a primer on grenade use and 'safe fire' to encourage people to use their explosive resources is a good idea as well.

You know...stuff you would think a basic infantryman would learn during basic training. Its thinks we don't think about after we've experienced the game because they are basics so well engrained into our knowledge that we think "shooting...duh". However for someone new it may be helpful.

I just realized I uploaded the file but forgot to post the link here. Sorry to anyone that was waiting for it. You can download the recording at http://mbennett.biz/TGU-1-20-2008.mp3 The file is about 40MB and is about an hour and 27 minutes long. I encoded it at 64 kbs but if someone really wants it I can do it at a higher bitrate and host that.

I went to the link, but all I got was 5 seconds of silence followed by "member left."

I downloaded it. It's all there but it does start off slow since the recording started at the end of role call and before the class started. Skip ahead a few minutes.

Just a note for the future, disable the entering/leaving notifications before recording off TS, lol.

No, what I mean is it says "member left," and then it's over. Unless it keeps playing after the bar hits the end

Did anyone ever get a screenshot of TS when this went on? I didn't get a roster of who showed up.
The soldier formerly known as, Eroak.
