Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
FYI, I average between 179mbps to 200mbps at home. However at a friends house I got to 500 easy and that was with him and another friend playing on that same internet connection.

We both have Time Warner Cable. I get the lowest internet package where he gets the one up. I pay around $20 a month where he pays close to $50. It's almost exactly relevant to how fast your connection is. For every dollar you spend you get 10 mbps.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
no, there are 1024 kilobits in a megabit, and 1024 bits in a kilobit. there is no way he has a 200mb (little "b" so megabit) connection at home through time warner cable. (10mb per $1 times $20/month)
as far as bit/Byte is concerned, there are 8 bits in a Byte.
i know, thus why i used a big "B" (for Byte) in my question.10mbps is Mega-BITS per seconds. Not bytes.
if the isp is counting 1000000 bits in a megabit it will be around 375KB after the conversion to Bytes (diving by 8)So when someone says they have a 3mbps connection, they don't download at 3 Mega-Bytes a second (3MB/s) They download at 3 Mega-Bits a second (300KB/s)
its all semantics anyways. i knew what he meant, i was feeling snarky earlier and just giving him a hard time.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
I did Ep 1 in like, four hours. Never even fired a magnum round. I've seen the internet mention Valve is treating the Episodes like HL3, which apparently means Ep 1 is the learning curve half. Granted, a few things will tear you up without HL2 experience (bumble balls, walking walls, Lamarr...) but it still felt like it stopped right when it was warming up.I hope that doesn't mean it's a mini game I was hoping for gameplay that would last 24 hours or more at the very least.
*In actual reality I'm still hoping for 72 hours!
And to really grind my gears, word is Ep 2 will be vehicle heavy. I hate cars. Alex better have driving AI and a butt cushion, because I have zero interest in playing Pole Position.

Yes you will be riding in a car alot but you'll be going from point a to point b and getting out fighting only to continue to point c and start the process over again.
But hey now you get to choose if you wanna go to point a or point b or point c at any given time
Oh yah and you have AI allys manning your turret on your car

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
Valve has stated ep 2 would be about 8 hours of gameplay. Ep1 was about 6 hours average time. Take that for what you will.

Let me guess, they'll spice things up with antlions to provide "variety." Yawn.

No! Backwards! Lame! I've seen the computer try to shoot.

Hey man, if you don't like the game, you certainly aren't required to play it.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
Given Valves track record on release, I'm just going to assume that it will be release 11:59PM on the 10th and not wait around checking steam during the day.
