Portal preload now available via Steam
Not really TF2 related, but as the title say you may now preload Portal. Just thought I would let those who may not have noticed know to avoid a potentially laggy launch day.

I love gaming, mmmmmmmm

Preload doesn't necessarily mean it downloads everything. It could be downloading 75% of it. It could 95%. It could be all 100 and they're just not letting you play it until the release.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
I hope it only download a part of it, my computer and steam don't get along when it comes to download speeds, and it downloaded fairly fast time-wise.

Small download doesn't mean limited gameplay.
Based on what I've seen in the trailers, there aren't a whole lot of textures and models in the game that would be consuming space. Also, the maps seem like they are fairly small.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
Put it in this perspective: # of textures and other exclusive content to Portal seems to be...next to minimal? The real content of the game is within its levels, and anyone familiar enough with Hammer knows that the bulk of a map size is made up of its textures, unique objects, and other map specific custom effects. Portal's challenges are mostly just crazy rooms. Seems to me like that paired with the minimal texture work would result in very small map sizes and thus a very small download.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
downloading episode 2 now, getting my "exceptional" download speeds from steam. You would think when you spend 50 bucks they would have a good download speed for you. I get better speeds through TG.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
I wouldn't doubt that now that you bring that up. I have bellsouth/at&t dsl. I'm supposed to 3mb down. I usually get that from TG and torrents (actually exceeded that with torrents before). I would think at&t would but with them being so big they may not. Might not be steam's fault after all. Anyone else with at&t dsl? what kind of speed are you set up for and what do you get?
I'm setup for 3mb down, I currently average around 100-120 KB/s.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
You in a big hurry to look at a "this game is unavailable" screen?
Screw Steam and their slow pre-load servers! I want my pre-load so fast it warps time, and I get it before I even touch the pre-load button.
I'm honestly hoping that they have learned their lesson from the Bioshock pre-load, and come release we don't throttle the servers because they only gave us 95% percent of the game.

Re: Portal preload now available via Steam
The review I read says most of the early levels are super easy and the whole game will not likely take long to finish. Unfortunately, since it's a puzzle game, replayability will be almost zero.

I was hoping for gameplay that would last 24 hours or more at the very least.
