EB Games has a venue of action considering they are most likely a franchise operation. Valve lacks that luxury. Players by nature will do what they can to "destroy" a game's reputation (Counter-Strike), even if they don't mean to. That's the problem with releasing IP out into the world for others to use and/or modify.

The only real argument against mine would be pointing out that a modder could most likely easily add FF back in once the SDK is released.

Just because you own it doesn't mean you can destroy Valve's design intensions.
Yes, it does. What do you think "mods" are? You list Insurgency as a game you play at TG. Do you think valve specifically intended HL2 to be used to create that type of game?

XP Professionals "design intention" is for use in a Domain network. I use it at home. Am I destroying MS's design intentions?

Since you are hosting a server you are representing the game to the population. Valve shouldn't give you the option to ruin it for everyone else.
How is me running a server however I want going to ruin it for everyone else? If you don't like the server, there are thousands more for you to game on. Why should I "not buy the game" if all I have issue with are a few minor details? By contrast, if a dev doesn't like some of the aspects of an engine they've licensed for use, do they scrap it and make their own, or do they mod it to make it work?

Have you ever been pubbing? Just randomly selecting servers on a whim? Try and find me a game with public run servers that doesn't contain a myriad of gametypes, maps, and attitudes that you don't despise.

Now, you're arguing from what you view as a rational perspective, and it is. There are certain things more mature players may not want to deal with. But what happens when your idea of what is fun and mature is the variable being locked out?

The only reason why Valve gives out SDKs and allows easy mods is to keep the game in circulation as long as possible.
Only reason? Doubtful. They also do it because the modding community makes them games they can buy up and then sell. Where do you think TFC originally came from? TheShip? I could go on.

But there's one reason they do it that's really at the heart of my argument: they do it because it's good business when you give your customers control to enhance their gaming experience. You and I may not view it as enhancement, but that's not the point.

No, it was actually a game called Subspace. It lives on under the name Continuum, and some of the original people who played the beta have now been playing it for over 10 years (freaks!). I put in over 500 hours in the 2-year beta, and it was my first taste of online tactical squad-based competition.

Man I -loved- Tribes 2 back in the day. Tribes 1 was great too, but only with mods. It was opposite for me with Tribes 2 - I only played Tribes 2 vanilla. All the mods I tried were lame as hell IMO. Custom maps were awesome most of the time though.

Tribes 2 sucked in any sort of outdoor setting. Giant floating health bars could be seen way before the character model was in view. Sniper rifle took two shots to the head and was a giant red line that gave away your position. Very craptastic.

Why would Valve release a TF2 SDK? I would expect them to update some of the Source SDK tools so people can make TF2 maps, but I don't think there is any interest in creating TF2 mods when the Source SDK already exists. There wasn't a CS:S or DOD:S SDK was there?

Well, maybe not specifically for TF2, but the orange box runs on a different engine from what I know. This fact is exactly why we lack an admin tool right now. Once that's released, hopefully the guys who do SourceMM will get on the ball and recompile their program.

I haven't seen a thread on FF yet that doesn't end in bitterness and tears.

I'm fairly sure it is simply an updated version of the source engine, not something completely different. To make a guess the reason there are no admin tools at the moment is due to it being a beta and there are about 3 updates a week.

The lack of admin tools is specifically due to the OrangeBox SDK not yet being released. While it is essentially an update of the Source engine, the existing plugins will not work and need to be re-compiled with the new SDK before they will load properly.

There are a few groups right now that made the tools we've used with our other Source servers that are just waiting for the SDK so they can recompile and get their updated versions out.

That makes sense. In that case I don't think the plugins will allow changing FF if the TF2 devs really don't want to allow it.
