It is also so amazingly limited compared to voice chat ("Quire! spy behind you on that ledge!"...twirl, bam, dead spy. Try that in text chat). Interestingly, the reason I'm in this forum now is that I happened into the Tactical Gaming server a few times and found that people were consistently coordinating their efforts with voip. To me, that is what differentiates a fun/effective server from the rest and keeps the TG server at the top of my favorites. |

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Welcome Quire
I can't wait to play with you.I always read the text chat when I'm waiting to respawn. I take that time to just friendly chat. Curse fellow TG members for being my nemesis. Pointing out obvious flaws in their names and such :P I always keep a little eye out for the text, granted I won't bother reading it during battle, but common are we seriously getting that bad of tunnel vision?

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Thanks for the welcome. I had a lot of fun last night on TG2 playing Well. I actually hit the top of the stats for a round or two. It's amazing how many points you can rack up if you are a medic who knows how to dodge and you have heavies/soldiers who know what they are doing...

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Is there a singleplayer (AI) mode to get used to the game before hopping onto a server?

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
No. Just choose Pyro, and set people on fire. That'll make you useful while you watch the other classes and learn how to play.
And by people I mean try to set everyone you see on fire. If they are a teammate they aren't hurt, if they are an enemy they will burn.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
As an orange box-noob I must say that I wasn't received very friendly on the server the first times I played.
I got some "nice sentry mate" and stuff like that. Telling people a better spot to place it would be much more effective. Ideally, lead them to a good place as someone who puts a sentry in a bad place probably doesn't know the map.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
I don't mind noob positions for sentries, especially since I don't Engi much so I pick poor spots, but I think I'm right to be irritated when someone says they're a noob, I tell them explicitly "don't put a sentry HERE because it won't be able to see the enemy team" and thirty seconds later, I hear BUILDIN A SENTRY! and there's a toolbox unfolding behind a wall behind a one-way barrier.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Engineer is a bit tough to use as your absolute first class. You need to know the basics of the maps before you have a reasonable idea of where to set up to be at all useful.
I think Medic is one of the best first classes. You just need to know one basic thing: point your medigun at friendlies and click. Pick somebody (preferably somebody on offense) and follow them around. Great way to learn the map and contribute. |

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
I'm usually successful as solider, but I don't enjoy playing it. Also, I don't understand why it is that when I'm a pyro and I flame a Soldier, it takes a good four seconds of steady burnage to knock him over, while I can be torched from full health in 1.2 seconds.
...that was either a super-luckly Crit stream, or I demand requital upon my assailant.
