Maybe we are a little mean...
It has come to my attention that, at times, people have been rather mean to those who are new to Team Fortress 2, or in a much more broader spectrum, Steam. For instance, whenever at my friend's house, I play Counter Strike on her computer since she has nothing else to play. I'm pretty much frustrated when people accuse me of being a "noob" for having a 4-9 K-D ratio. Maybe it's because I'm not familiar with the game mechanics or it's because they play the game more than I do. Regardless, I think it's unfair to quickly jump on people who don't fully grasp a game.
I was playing TF2 on another server since the TG 7 server was full. The people there kept typing in messages like "(blah blah) sucks", and "someone kick (blah blah) for being so bad". I was one of the ones being called for kicking (a 5-12 K-D ratio). Now, I'm not saying this kind of asinine behavior happens here. It doesn't, but I was rebuked by someone (non TG) for not knowing how to do simple things like ask for a medic, taunt, or type in chat (which I still don't know how to do in TF2) while on our server.
As part of the TG community, I think it's in our interests to help those who are new to the games we are playing and to make them, as well as ourselves, better players. Yes, we can be a little agitated at times at people who don't seem to know what they're doing, but more often than not it's because they genuinely don't know what they're doing. We should fix that.
(p.s. How do you do in-game chat for TF2, and how do you change your name in-game? My name's too damn long...)

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Hi Master,
That is one thing that impresses me about the TG servers and our community. If you let us know that you are new, then we will go above and beyond to help you out. This is true even if you are not new but just plain..well are not that good. Like me for instance. Tg takes all kinds to make the fight go right..I'll leave the killing to the 7th..
To change your ingame name, log into your steam account and click on edit my Steam Id and don;t forget to save your changes and let everyone know what your new name is.
As opposed to in game chat....
You can text via the U and Y keys...
Voice can be accessed by pressing the "v" key.
All of these can be changed through the options menu.
Have fun and happy gaming. If you see any of us, I am sure we all would be happy to show you the ropes.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
More than likely I will be purchasing The Orange Box tomorrow, so for anyone who sees me on in the next few days, just know that I'm completely new to this game as I have not played the beta or any previous Team Fortress game. I'll try to read up on it as best I can before jumping on any servers but I'm sure the only way to get acclimated to the game is to just jump right in and start playing. So there's a fair warning from me.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Oh, you're totally dead, n00b!
Actually, I haven't heard much in the way of criticism of other players, other than Bommando and Fehmart, but they're usually angry at the whole team. I've seen a few people kicked for swearing after being warned, but bad behaviour has been at a minimum. It does help that your stats are not compared to other players and all you see are total points on the scoreboard. You can never really tell by the points though, cuz many times things that should be done don't pull in the big points, like pyro checking for spy's in the back and protecting intel. The Dirty

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
That type of attitude is part of why TG exists. We strive to get away from that kind of mentality and care more about teamwork and respect than scores or kill to death ratios.
As far as the server goes; The TG7 server is not a Tactical Gamer server nor is it endorsed by us. We do have two TF2 servers online that we do endorse and would absolutely love it if the TG community could contribute to seeding the servers and showing the newcomers what gaming at TG is all about. So if you're looking to help secure a home for this title at Tactical Gamer, show your support and hop on the official Tactical Gamer TF2 servers!
The official Tactical Gamer TF2 servers are:Team Fortress 2 - SRV #1 75.125.55.2
Team Fortress 2 - SRV #2 75.125.55.3

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
And to follow up what Apophis said... our 2 servers are admin. We have an admin team that covers those servers pretty well. It's hard to play at night and not find an admin or two. If they aren't in game, almost all of them are available on-line for any issues that may arise. We do not bite, we promise!

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Yah I was a bit surprised overnight literally I found myself alone on TG server 1 and no one came and helped seed. I was a little surprised.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
With the Orange box now available at a retail level, expect a lot more new players. That's not a bad thing and this is the opportunity to train them to play the right way.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
Actually, it was weird. The map test on Server #2 had all of 4 people in on it. I wondered if anyone had issues connecting, but I received no messages, PMs, or chat room complaints. I can only assume not many people were interested.
By the time we ended it, Server #1 was full. Then server #2 started pulling players and server #1 cleared out after a couple hours. All in all it was a busy night.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
I just got it. I am officially a TF2 noob. I plan on playing poorly and running around like an idiot...the way I play BF2 now.

Re: Maybe we are a little mean...
In reference to the original poster, the admin team and I have been working hard to create an environment on the server where everyone feels welcome and teamwork and communication take precedence over individual skill.
At no point while I'm in charge of this server will berating another player become acceptable. You can inform, teach, and help anyone. You can (and should) ask other players to switch classes or move to another location to help their team.
This isn't just on the admin team though. You have to be willing to help as well, and I'm sure most of you already do. Don't just sit idly by while players run around as "rambos." Guide them to make the right decisions.
Let me give you an example I had today, a player was having issues getting support as a heavy. His team needed medics. If he went medic, there were no heavies and vice versa. So, here's his reaction:
Now, most people just ignore this because "they're doing their own thing." He got even more annoyed.Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:13:16: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say_team "we need a medic"
Still, no good results came of this.Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:13:42: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say "I love how our team refuses to play TEAMwork in TEAM fortress 2" L 10/10/2007 - 15:14:26: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say "no our team refuses to have a medic"
Hunter tries to diffuse the situation (I'm not knocking him not being able to, he did his best and I REALLY appreciate that because it's the right idea). Then I see this:
Now, my finger hovered near the banID command, but I stopped myself. This public player was reacting the only way he thought he could. So, I took it upon myself to inform him of another way.Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:14:57: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say "I did" L 10/10/2007 - 15:14:59: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say "****face"
So, what happened after this?Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:16:31: "Console<0><Console><Console>" say ""point someone out and ask them to go medic."" L 10/10/2007 - 15:16:47: "Console<0><Console><Console>" say ""Have a guy who is doing poorly as a spy? Ask him to change.""
He asks for help by singling out a player who isn't doing so hot.Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:16:50: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say "spinnuck can you please support me in being a medic?"
The situation was resolved with teamwork and maturity. Seriously, that was a great feeling on my part that two players could resolve an issue like that so early in the life of this server.Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:17:00: "spinuck<68><STEAM_0:1:4883056><Blue>" changed role to "medic" L 10/10/2007 - 15:17:04: "spinuck<68><STEAM_0:1:4883056><Blue>" say_team "sure"
Blue team ended up losing the match, but instead of complaining, Luftwaffe said:Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:18:43: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say "thanks for the medic help guys it makes this alot smoother"
Teamwork doesn't just happen. It takes work. All the things we take for granted in established games start off from scratch in new titles. Sure, we've got a better base, but the work still needs to go in there.Code:L 10/10/2007 - 15:19:28: "Luftwaffe Flak Vierling<62><STEAM_0:0:11262661><Blue>" say "gg"
Your average public player eats this stuff up. They WANT a team. They want people grouping up and dominating (or just losing because they were outmatched, not because it was a 24 player deathmatch server). Help them see TG is about this 100% and they will stick around.
I'm not putting it to EVERY player to have to take time out to teach other players how the game works, but you can't have teamwork without the effort. If you don't put in the time, do you really expect others to?
