Sourcemods don't work :(
For a bit over a month none of my HL2 mods have been working at all- this inculdes HL2: Deathmatch Source, HL2: Episode 1, Counter Strike: Source, G-Mod, Team Fortress 2, HL2: Episode 2 and Portal. Whenever I try to run any of the above it shows the launch window then I get an error message saying "hl2.exe has stopped working." What can I do to fix this?
I've verified the game files and defragmented them, nothing seems to work. I *know* that they worked before as I played lots of CS:S and G-Mod this summer.

Re: Sourcemods don't work :(
Without a much more detailed bug report, there's not much I can do for you. You'd be better off talking to valve.
What I can tell you to do is backup all your needed local Steam content, then uninstall steam and download the latest installer. Then restore a single game and see if that fixes the problem. If you have to, redownload the content from Steam. That way you can make sure you don't have corrupted data.
If that doesn't work, you need to start scanning for viruses and spyware. Then look for possible driver issues.

Re: Sourcemods don't work :(
heh, i wish i knew more info myself. the error message doesnt give me any other details.
backing up and reinstalling is probably the best option right now.
however, something odd has happened. i got a trial for 'the ship' yesterday and have been playing it a bit. it works fine, apart from a bug when i play online- but thats not all that important. the main thing is that the game runs...isn't it a sourcemod?

Re: Sourcemods don't work :(
agggh, i reinstalled steam and all the apps and i got a problem that some other people have had- i get nothing but a "preparing to launch" window. steam ****ed up on me so i rebooted and now i'm back to the same old problem of the hl2.exe error.

Re: Sourcemods don't work :(
oh man, hl2 seems as messed up as EA..............................Good luck with your problems, I can't play episode 2, team fortress 2, or portal at directx 9. HL2 and episode 1 play fine though, I don't have to change the directx level with those two.

Re: Sourcemods don't work :(
just a few suggestions that may or may not help....
1. Uninstall Steam and all of its components (completely), then re-install. You may have done this already.
2. Update your video driver.
3. Defrag your hard drive.
or try..

Re: Sourcemods don't work :(
Fresh install of Windows might help!
I do that every now and then just to clean my system up. If you don't want to do that that, at least make sure you delete EVERYTHING, including registry keys before you reinstall HL2... and then as fenix said, one mod at a time to see if one of the mods is causing the errors.
I'm running Vista 64bit with no problems.

Re: Sourcemods don't work :(
thanks for all the input guys. i couldnt even get half this much at the steam support forum.

i plan on getting xp on this machine some time around christmas- but i need to get the screen fixed first (theres a green line down it
) what i dont get is my friend has practically the same laptop (mine just has a few more bells and whistles) and everything works on his. i also need to take the time to back up all my crap. mainly music and some ISO's here and there but it's a bitch to do. :/
EDIT: DAMMIT Bc2ID, Now that all my stuff is working again how am i EVER going to finish all the work i hafta do?

thank you so much guys. now i can get back to playing REAL games (before this i was playing aerofighters 64).
the last post in the second link he posted fixed the error. Gmod runs fine and i'm hoping so does everything else.

You own Aerofighters Assault on the N64? I've been looking everywhere for that game yet could never find it. Lucky bastard.
