    Might want to check your motherboard's chipset drivers for the latest version. I had a very similar problem with the latest ATI drivers on multiple ATI cards, and if I dropped back a couple of versions (7.4 for me), the problem stopped. After updating to the lastest VIA chipset drivers, I was able to bump my ATI drivers up to the latest release.

    I was having the same issue with my ATI drivers. Had to roll them back to an earlier version after updating to the newest. The newest drivers gave me that same error. I'll look into what you're saying Rampage.

    I heard of someone rolling it back to 6.1 and got the game working....

    The Steam support page on this issue actually says to update to the latest drivers, which I assume is outdated advice. It does say that if the crash persists after you try to update drivers to roll back to DX 8.1:

    * Type in -dxlevel 80.
    * Click OK.

    Note: if you are attempting to play Team Fortress 2, Portal or Half-Life 2: Episode Two, you must set your launch option to -dxlevel 81 instead.
