    constant game crashes/ freezes

    hi there

recently in TF2 I have been getting game crashes and freezes, this will normally happen shortly after joining a server.

what happens is everything will run fine when suddenly the screen will freeze and I hear a "beep", the game will then freeze in which I then have to hold alt + F4 and wait a few minutes for it to shut down, or it will crash and I am presented with an error message.

I would like to point out that these crashes did not occur when I first bought the game, I think it started to happen after a steam update. Since then they have become more and more frequent.

below are two screen shots showing the two error messages.

    any help would be appreciated.

    thanks.

First set all your in-game video settings to low quality. Next right click the TF2 Icon and go to properties. In the target add -directx 81.

What video card are you using?

Peculiar... it's not a universal problem, as I've had no issues. Bc2ID's suggestion is solid, though.

    Re: constant game crashes/ freezes

thank you for your help but unfortunately it hasn't worked, at the moment it seems to be 50.50 as to whether the game will crash or not.

to be honest I think it's to do with my video card rather than the game, one time before the game crashed, all of the characters were completely black with nothing but white eyes. (whether that gives any clues about what's happening).

looking at my video card would you say that it's the cause of the problem as to not being powerful enough to run the game?

Did you update your videa drivers?

If so, you can try this as it has had some success with other players with Vista

"Start the game. When you get to the connect to server screen hit Ctrl+alt+del to bring up task manager. End the task GameOverlayUI.exe. Then close task manager and go back into the game. You won't have any crashing problems. You'll have to do this everytime you start the game."

Worth a shot..let me know how it goes.

I'm fairly certain that unchecking "Enable Steam Community In-Game" in the "In-Game" tab of the Steam settings will stop that process from starting in the first place. That'd be a whole lot easier than manually closing the process after it has launched. It also avoids the craziness that happens when trying to get back into a Source game after minimizing it.

Yes but many Vista users state that this does not close even when checked. It is a known bug/flaw.

bollocks...back to the drawing board then.

What version of DirectX are you running, sometimes TF2 can conflict with anything over 8.1.

    again sorry about the confusion.

The anti virus thing is interesting, as I have AVG and suffer from 2/4 symptoms, plus I run with directX 9.

Thanks very much for this Bc2ID, will look into it and let you know what happens.

I dont think this will help you but others with crash/freezes I suggest dusting your machines guts out of these http://koti.phnet.fi/vuorenei/Jori.jpg.
Even small blowing air and sucking it into vacuum cleaner helped me to reduce crashs I had by +60%.
