Ribbons?

I looked at the ribbons page, and I when I saw game-specific class ribbons, I was surprised that TF2 didn't have them. Does anyone else think that this is a good idea? I mean, we might as well just give Magna the highest spy one, but it seems like fun for the rest of us to work up to.

Re: Ribbons?

Enh, they seem redundant with achievements built into the game, and more to come.

Re: Ribbons?

The acheivements were really easy to obtain though. The only difficult ones were the shutouts on Gravel Pit and possibly Dustbowl, but that has nothing to do with classes.

Re: Ribbons?

Valve's achievements are mostly pat-on-the-head.

There are a number of class ribbons from other games we could probably use, but then again, just because two games have an Engineer or Sniper class doesn't mean a TF2 Engineer and the other one use any similar skills, so perhaps a new set would be best.

Re: Ribbons?

This is being discussed in the Admin forum. I think that the consensus is to use exisitnig ribbons across all formats.

These ribbons aren't?

I've never felt the need to show off my mad video game skillz by putting pictures of military-style ribbons by my posts in an internet forum.

The ribbons are pat-on-the-back.

You seem to enjoy a need to show off your mad beer drinking skills. Strokes/folks.

Re: Ribbons?

Ribbons are a recognition of someone's effort. It was not meant to be a "look at me, I am sooooo leet."

They were meant tor.."Acknowledge your teammates' Outstanding and Distinguished efforts:"

I'm not showing off my beer skills- I'm keeping a physical record of beers that I've tasted (and I always keep a few extra ones for that month for buddies when they drop by). The difference is that there's no skill involved with my beer, and that it's a real-life souvenir.

If I'm understanding you correctly, then, they're not a "Look at me, I'm awesome", they're a "Hey, look at this guy, he's awesome"?

That would be correct. An in general underscores most of TG's philosophy in gaming. (Respect)

Oh, I completely agree regarding the community being built up on respect. Personally, it just strikes me wrong having signs up saying "HAY!!!1 RESPECT THIS PERSON!!!!"

Does the site automatically post ribbons in people's signatures, or does the person have to do it? The former sounds like a better idea. If it were the latter...
I think of charities- many of them, upon donation, give you a certificate or somesuch thanking you for donating. If the ribbons require one to post them in one's signature, that's the equivalent to posting those certificates on your office door.

Re: Ribbons?

The donor certificate looks like this:

They are automated but it's disabled because it was choking the server to death. Need moar optimisations.

The purpose isn't to say OMG HE IS SO LEET, but to say that this person plays according to the rules and is an example of how respective roles in games should be played.

I seem to remember a certain med student getting a chubby about being awarded the White Coat with Dr. Yournamehere on the breast. Perhaps we should ask him about wearing awards.

Re: Ribbons?

It would actually be more like a military personel wearing ribbons that signify his accomplishments. Oh wait, that's what it's for.

The difference here is that the white coat signifies completing an incredible amount of real work, dedication, and service to other patients- other real human beings, helping enhance their lives, and, in many cases, both saving and delivering their lives. The white coat is the uniform of somebody who you can trust (or at least should be able to :P) to do what's right for you- to upkeep your health. It's like a firefighter's coat and helmet, or a police officer's uniform.

These ribbons signify one particular playing style in an internet game.

Assuming that it's an "honorable" and "proper" and "mature" playing style, then one can assume that it's respectable to play in that style. Awesome! The reputation should spread on its own, without having to post specific pictures on one's signature in an internet forum to show others that they should give the player respect.

Really? You're in the military? Awesome! What was your accomplishment in the military? Is that ribbon regarding the TG vs. TFR match? You helped defend our nation, serving honorably, protecting life here and elsewhere, thereby earning a ribbon for distinguished service... by playing a game online? "Oh, wait..."

Real people earn real ribbons every day for real service saving real people's lives. Comparing internet forum pictures to that seems- just a bit- inappropriate.

Hey, look! I've got one now, too!

Re: Ribbons?

It's also not a real ribbon. It's not a big deal. We're not degrading uniforms or military ribbons, this is our own form of showing someone's service. Just as a doctor shouldn't have to wear his coat for people to trust him, or a police officer or a firefighter because their reputation spreads on its own. But they do, and we honor them for their service.
