How does it work

How does the achievement/upgrade system work. I see level 1 shovel and crap in teh statistics. I mean do i spend points on special items or upgrades or what.

It works like this:

Get 12 achievements; get needles.
Get 24 achievements; get krieg.
Get 36 achievements; get saw.
