leave of absence
I was psyched when I bought my new computer. I was excited as I downloaded TF2. I was horrified to find out that my new laptop has an Intel integrated video card.
Anyway, as much as it sucks, I can't play TF2 until I find a way to upgrade, which might acutally be impossible. I've tried to play Steam games, but when one of them does manage to load, I may as well be playing Typewriter Fortress Classic. Framerate is about a third of what it should be.
if anyone has a solution on how to use an unsupported video system, let me know right away. Otherwise, you may either commiserate with or mock me.Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.

Re: leave of absence
Laptop... you're probably boned.
How low have you gone with the settings? -dxlevel 81. Lower might work but I think they've officially dropped 70 and maybe 80. mat_picmip can go to 4 if you're desperate for video ram. r_lod can be tweaked to reduce polycount, and candy like bumpmaps and specular can be pitched as well.

Re: leave of absence
intel chipset...the bane of the graphics world. magna's assessment is probably right, you might just be boned. best bet is to crack open your laptop and examine the architecture and see if you have any slots available for a third party video card (you can get them for laptops, you generally just have to order them).
FWIW, always check the specs on your computer before you buy it, lest you wind up with nasty surprises. Also, laptops are BAD for gaming, if for no other reason than the fact that it's a cast iron b**ch to upgrade them.

Re: leave of absence
PC gaming is for Desktops. If you get a laptop, any games you can run on there is a bonus, but its not something you should depend on.

Well, if you decide to crack open your computer, make sure you aren't voiding your warranty in the process.

Re: leave of absence
I'm able to play TF2 smoothly on my laptop. I'm not sure who you bought your machine from, but Dell offered several different cards in my series. I actually upgraded to a Geforce 8600M for about $100. I also had to ditch Vista in lue of running games on it as the drivers for Vista were outright terrible. Now I typically get greater than 60fps on most maps running at a resolution of 1024x768. Also, if you have a dual core, you should use mat_queue_mode 2 which puts both your CPUs to use.

Re: leave of absence
Of course, mat_queue_mode 2 still leads to spontanious hangs/crashes.

Re: leave of absence
Magna is correct. I would only recommend using this command once you have settled on the rest of your video configuration. Changing any video settings with this parameter set to 2 will surely freeze up your computer. Hopefully Valve will continue to work out the bugs in this command because it can achieve a 20+ boost in fps when used on a dual core machine.

Re: leave of absence
Changing a video setting isn't needed. I've hung with it running because I stabbed in the direction of a soldier, or had the unmitigated gall to exit a the Dustbowl Act II RED spawn room.
Nonetheless, it does an awesome number on your Static Prop Rendering budget.

Re: leave of absence
I actually have a link (unfortunately at home and I seem to be unable to google it) to a site that can help you run TF2 on an intelgrated chip, even as low as a GMA 950 - but I hope you have the x3100 cuz that would make it more viable. I will post the link when I get home from work.
Here goes: http://intelintegratedgaming.blogspot.com/
Scroll over halfway down and there are some instructions. Might I suggest after making his changes, remove the dxlevel and autofig commands from the line, so any internal game tweaking you make will stay.
Also, try the program from this: http://1337.gameworldonline.be/tf2tweaker.php
No, it is not malware or anything like that, it works cuz I used it on my Vista box. (It's a P4 3.2 HT with 7600 GS and 2 Gigs of Ram), but thanks to Vista and the proc bottleneck I needed additional tweaking to run TF2 to my satisfaction.
Anyway I hope that helpsLast edited by RedForman; 05-29-2008 at 07:09 PM. Reason: Additional info added.

Re: leave of absence
Thanks everyone... It's a shame I can't play so much anymore, but I'll be sure to log on from other PCs, or at a gaming cafe sometime.
