Pyro unlockables/achivements
http://www.steampowered.com/pyro/?pw=presspreview
I'm personally not very happy at the changes. They're catering towards the bad skilled pyros here.
First of all, I don't know how effective the flare gun will be. If its like an instant ignite, I'll be ticked, because that turns the pyro into one of the best sniper counters. If there's travel time involved for the projectile (which I would think so, seeing how its a flare gun), I won't care as much, as all it will do is discourage camping engies/snipers, something I don't do much of anyway.
The backburner is going to suck. Pyros usually tend to circle around enemies really quickly when they run into a group, this will result in random critical hits counting. They'll pretty much do a spies job, maybe even better than a spy with all that extra health.
Axtinguisher im fine with, you have to be close to use it anyway and they'll deserve to die if thats the case.
The compressed air blast is going to be interesting. I hope it doesn't equal like a rocket jump or something.
As for the achievements, one actually requires someone to ragequit which I think is hilarious. Theres going to be x3 taunting as well.Last edited by Headshot Yoshi; 06-18-2008 at 10:19 AM.

Re: The Pyro is Next
Wow, sounds like they may have over buffed this guy. I know who ill be targeting first now BEFORE the sentry when I go in with an Uber. Take down the pyro or loose your invuln. If this guy does get the jump on you from behind you will be dead. I guess we have to wait and see how the dynamics play out to really understand the effects. At least the achievements are easy and should come with most regular play.

Re: The Pyro is Next
If the flaregun is effective against snipers I'll have to start prioritize them, something which I should really not be doing against a close range class. I fail to see how its a good thing either, because they're going to lose their obscurity in the battlefield. When faced with two possible enemies to shoot at, lets say a heavy and a pyro, before I would pick the heavy because he seems like the bigger threat. If he has the ability to set me on fire from a mile away, I'm going to go after him first.
Honestly Pyro didn't need a buff. People just needed to play it properly and adapt. What's worse is that these buffs are now going to make Spy harder to play, which will result in more whining and then valve having to make unlockables for the spy which will buff them too, which means good spies (aka magna) will have even more powerful weapons at their disposal which we all know he doesn't need
In the end I know I'll adapt so I'm not going to make a huge deal out of it. I'm just hoping they have the sniper unlockables to replace the secondary weapon with a shotgun or something, because I hate the SMG.
Yeah I know. I thought the whole point of the uber was to help teams push up, if pyros have the ability to break ubers easily then it'll just mean more stalemates since nobody moves up on pubs without an uber.

Re: The Pyro is Next
yes, you can read what each achievement is for!
"Reflect 100 projectiles with your compressed air blast."
Hmmm!
You can also reflect rockets.
Also
"Ignite 100 enemies with the flare gun"
So there you have it.

Re: The Pyro is Next
Oh yeah, also, ctf_turbine as a default map? Really? Didn't we just remove it from the map cycle because nobody likes it?

Re: The Pyro is Next
I don't like ctf_turbine, and honestly, we don't know how powerful the air thing is yet. A demoman can separate an uber by himself as well, but he has to know what he's doing. As for overpowered (We'll talk about the backburner seeing as we don't know about the air)? I don't think so. Basically, he's doing what Magna does, which is backstab people. If you've played Pyro extensively, you know that hit registry in general is messed up, but compounded with backstabs? Well, they just better have done something about that. Basically, here's the tradeoff from spy and pyro (with backburner), seeing as they have the same job.
Spy:
Disguises
Cloak
Slightly faster kill
Pyro:
100 more health
Afterburn
It's still a toss-up in my opinion. And we're still speculating. We don't know how powerful anything will be, so should we target this thread more for ideas for using these?

Re: The Pyro is Next
Spy:
Cloak.
Stab four times to maybe get a 20-dmg slash to register.
Dies to any damage.
Can't attack even to defend himself half the time.
Pyro:
Stronger than SOLDIER.
Faster than ANYONE with >150HP.
All crits.
Time-delayed zillions of damage.

Re: The Pyro is Next
In my opinion, a close-range guy should have as much health as the soldier. But I honestly am not sure how I'll be able to decide between the two flamethrowers. I guess it depends on how good the air is.

Re: The Pyro is Next
Spy and scout are close range guys.
The health was fine the way it was. If you were an idiot pyro running from the other side of the map holding mouse1, you'd most surely die. Some even scored a kill or two when they really shouldn't. So now the idiots running from one side of the map to the other have longer survivability for their stupidity.

Re: The Pyro is Next
Actually, look at the achievements again. Most require you to SET people on fire. Once they're burning, what next? Not very many people will be making the 20 achievements required for the backburner right off of the bat. Also, it encourages you to flank. Air-blast will be better for spearheading pushes.
