    Atra's Sandbox

Atra's Sandbox. I'm going to put anything I think of in here. Tactics, tips, videos to review, that sort of thing.

Most of this should be general tips, but if you don't want the other stuff in here, feel free to move this to another area.

As some of you may know, I've been addicted to the Soldier for the past four days.

I don't claim to know all that there is to know about the soldier (in my 15 hours grand total of soldier time) but I do know that I've improved greatly by watching videos and reading guides:

    Steam forum links:

This is where I started with the soldier. Before I even got my hands dirty seriously playing the class I went here:

    http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...d.php?t=701625

Now, I kind of wanted to steer myself less towards the tactical decisions that a soldier has to make, and work towards perfecting the basic skills. (basically I wanted to dominate like Reptile) And I wanted to do it fast. And believe it or not, a serious tactical game is not the fastest way to do that. With a long respawn time and a long walk it just didn't give me the experience that could be achieved with a DM style game. I frequented dm_duel, and dm_store maps for about the past two days and watched my skill level skyrocket. (har har, a pun) I was leading targets better, I was shotgunning with perfect timing. My rocket-jumping has improved to the point where I'm confident in what direction I'm going when I fire the RPG at my feet.

Atra's Soldier Tip #1: Deathmatch, baby. (Oh god, I'm probably going to get flamed for that.)

Next, I'd like to mention that Soldier has to be the most perceptive and reactive. I found that turning my sensitivity to insane levels helped my soldier play greatly, as I was able to react quickly and efficiently to that pyro that jumped around the corner.

    Atra's Soldier Tip #2: Sensitivity is > 15 (mines at like.. 17)

    [/soldier stuff]

Next I'd like to compare TG to the rest of the gaming world.

I was practicing Soldier on a DM map with Yoshi this morning. (Yoshi, of course, was not playing Soldier ) and I was able to experience the vast difference in skill between TG and most pub players. Now, in TG games, I tend to get decimated. I'm not afraid to admit that I am far from the most skilled guy in the server. But when I was in this other server, I was dominating, and I couldn't understand it. I know I've increased in skill as a soldier as I've been practicing almost non stop, but this was weird. How can a nub soldier come in and wreck the place? (behind, of course, Yosh on teh snipar rifle) After awhile Yoshi pointed out how.. just.. incredibly dumb most of the players were. When a pyro would rush him, they would run straight at him They would even ignore the rockets that I blasted at their feet. They wouldn't pull out their shotgun/flaregun, they would keep running, with their flames about fifteen feet away from him. They earned a crit rocket to the feet, or a bullet through the brain for their troubles.

What does this teach us? If you're close to the bottom of the scoreboards in a TG server. compared to the general gaming crowd, you're probably quite skilled. I kid you not, and I'm not sure how many of you go play in random pubs anymore, but try it and watch the gibs fly.

    [/endegotrip]

Next, I was thinking about the setups and groupings of Medics and Heavies these days. What ruins heavy/medic combo like nothing else? Sniper or a Spy, right? If you could find a pyro that's a crack shot with the flare gun, why doesn't he go with them too? I rarely see the medic dedicated to more than one player, and not having to worry about spies (pyro would spycheck anything that came within 30ft of the group, lulz) and snipers (a well placed flare gun shot makes hitting anything with the sniper near impossible) would allow the heavy and medic to truly focus on wrecking the other team's players and defenses.

(probably a bad idea, but I've never seen it done, so who knows?)

That's all for today. Maybe some tomorrow...

pyros are an impatient folk and will never just hang out with a heavy medic or defending some engies sentry.

As far as soldier I used to dominate quake 3 with all weaponry and the rocket was my second favorite after the plasma gun. Using a good rocket gun is all about anticipation and closing out options for the opponent. What do I mean by this? Anticipation is obvious but closing outnoptions means I anticipate your movement in one direction but I also anticipate that you will see my rocket and change direction another way. This means my second rocket might be on the other side of the first. This way you close your opponent in. Demos do this with their stickies too, giving you no escape if you don't fall back. Also being an assault class you must be constantly in motion and bunny hop as well as rocket jump to be unpredictable and tough to shoot. By the way as a side note, I learnt to play heavy in team fortress arena which was the add free add on for quake 3. Ah the good old days. 1999 I think

Sensitivity is a funny thing. Before, I used to have my sensitivity rather high, around 6.0. I realized that still targets mostly like heavies and snipers, I would have issues hitting. Because I scope in, compensate a bit, but end up missing because my sensitivity is too damn high.

So today as a test I put it to 3.0. For the two rounds that I did play like that I was way, way more accurate. I had a much easier time picking out the medic and snipers on the other team.

I think I'm going to mess around with zoom ratio sensitivity setting.

It's really easy to tell actually when people are after me. They usually switch to sniper, or noticeably go straight for me.

Unfortunately many people who play the DM maps are just in it to get mindless kills as easy as possible. TG is more of a tactical server.

I just wish people would stop switching to sniper so much when they're on the same team as me. Very rarely do we ever need more than one sniper. They see me scoring a lot of kills and then say "hey I should go sniper too". Unfortunately they switch from something that we actually need like medic, solider or something so the other team has a far easier time pushing against us since snipers can't hold the line.

I take exception to that remark as the resident pyro master who played medic to your heavy for a good 45 minutes today!

And yoshi, I rarely go straight for you on purpose, but whenever I'm serving up some sniper flambé and you're on the other team, the thought "gee, I wonder if this is yoshi i'm cooking..." does cross my mind.

You're the only pyro I've ever seen flanking.

And no you don't go straight for me.

    Re: Atra's Sandbox

Well thank you sir. I completely agree with your assessment of people going sniper as well. We had a round today where probably 6 people on our team went sniper after one guy racked up like 9 kills in short order. Right about that time, we got completely mowed down. Kinda hard to stop the flood of enemy players coming at you with lots of bullets and things that explode when it's just you and 7 dead snipers.

Oh well, at least the pyro "nerf" has weeded out most of the morons who were only playing pyro because it was the proverbial "i win" button for a while. Makes me much happier not being in the middle of the tard farm.

What I meant is that when a person is playing pyro he is not in a defensive mindset really. So sitting around a heavy medic flaming away is not his idea of fun. Mindsets have to change depending on what kit you don so when you went medic you where a more than suitable partner and did save my arse on various ocasions.

Praticing the use of individual skills is always a great complement to teamwork. Before the first TG Counter-Strike Source in-house tourny began, our team spent a few hours on dm_iceworld in order to improve our twitch gaming. I also do/did the same every once in a while for TF2. The improvement in skill is one thing, but it also helps improve your moral to know that you are actually capable as an individual. I believe this helps you succeed in situations you may have failed in without that confidence.

Next I'd like to compare TG to the rest of the gaming world.
    ::snip::
This is a phenonmena I've noticed across the board with TG games. TG is far from the best in terms of group skill, but the dynamic is there. For many games (especially those on the Steam side of things), the community is pretty tight knit and everyone fits into their roles. But the laid back community (when it comes to skill) actually helps bolster a player's base. It's something I've found hard to explain, but no matter how terrible I was on the TG NS server, I could go find some pub combat servers and generally dominate the score-board. TF2 is no exception.

The general skill-base here is much higher in part because I believe the people who frequent the server already have the desire to improve their game. Forcing people to communicate and work as a team only helps that perception. To try and explain that better: the player who is content to just run straight at you every time, never learning or even trying something different is the kind of person who will get booted (or leave of his own accord) because he doesn't like to communicate or work with his team. Even if an admin doesn't remove him, the general attitude of the community will make him feel unwelcome because he doesn't fit in.

The person willing to learn and communicate (which tends to make a player better as an individual) is more likely to hang around and improve his/her game through the community.

For an example: I lead people or bark orders, depending on your (read: Magna's) perception. I will constantly badger players to watch their backs for spies or look to fall back when outnumbered and wait for reinforcements. This is a big deal when looking at the team as a whole. But if someone yells at you enough about particular issues, you tend to remember them. So, when you are alone on some faceless public server, you're instinctively checking for spies or know that you should play a certain way to improve your chances of survival.

I agree completely with you Fenix. It seems that no matter how much you like it, if you do something continuously, and repetitively you're going to keep on doing it continuously and repetitively. This applies to all sorts of things, rather than just spy-checking and general game awareness. Kind of hard-wired, I think.

Can we do it, can we do it, please Magna, can we do it?

Seriously though. TG's scrim team was pretty good, and I've always wanted to see you guys go up against someone that would give you a challenge...I'm just thinking, you know, like.. Go dominate all the pros? I'm signing up for more info, either way. But you guys should totally think about signing up too!

I remember us getting crushed by the -F- guys. maybe a rematch there first is in order. Those guys are good and will show us if we have gotten better since they dominated us some months back

We definately need to qualify ourselves. Our list of victories are: Pre-ST TFR and CORE. We beat two teams. Whoo hoo.
