Re: Arena Mode
I'm not saying I hate/love arena mode yet, yeah I want to try it too before I make up my mind, I was just listing potential problems/benefits from this new game mode. So far though, I like. If I'm totally wrong about uber pyros ruining it for me which I hope I am, then I'll love it more than any other gametype.
Actually, I don't think 60 seconds is enough to get a good ubercharge going anyway, unless you're grinding.
At the very least, it looks like a great gamemode for seeding servers. There's nothing more annoying then playing a 3 vs 3 dustbowl round and having your whole team eliminated just to watch the 15 second respawn as you can't do nothing to stop the cap since nobody is alive.
Demos I'm not so worried about. Pyros only have to put their flamethrower on you for half a second and then the burnout will kill you, plus its easy to do since the flamethrower range is now insane. Demomen need to use a good 2-3 stickies to kill someone, which generally is more difficult and eaiser to dodge.

Re: Arena Mode
I've always loved sudden death. It's my favorite part of Hydro. I think that this gametype would work fine with decent teamwork-- pyros don't catch fire, so the air blast would become useful against ubers-- this leads to a significant decrease in Backburner usage, which I'm happy with.
As for feeling like Counterstrike, that can be good or bad. If it's like online play of CS, that sucks, because that game is all about the Ubernerds sniping you across the map with a pistol. and money management. pfft. But, in a LAN game, where you're among friends, it's not such a crappy game.
The same idea carries over into TF2, except that you can't 1shot anyone with a pistol from across the map in the new Arena Mode. There's only so good one person can get without teamwork. But, it definitely will sort out the boys from the men.Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.

Re: Arena Mode
I haven't looked at screen shots for the map, but if it's open ala dust bowl a good defensive demo can completely stop an uber pyro because he can use his stickies to launch either the pyro or the medic into the stratosphere, because they ignore the pile of stickies. It's a tactic I've used on dustbowl extensively with great success.

Re: Arena Mode
I played a bit of arena today.
- Random crits ARE enabled, and yes they suck.
- It actually will divide into 3 teams when theres a lot of people, which its kindof stupid to be sitting out, but I guess it makes the teams more managable.
- There's no teamstacking at all. Totally random teams. I guess thats good. Prevents people from trying to skip the autobalance.
I honestly want to try it more but its a bit buggy right now.
EDIT: On second thought, 3 teams sounds good. When you have it going with about 6-7 people on each team, this means each player becomes more valuable and if one lucky crit knocks out half the team 3v5 is still more doable then something like 5v10Last edited by Headshot Yoshi; 08-19-2008 at 11:07 PM.

Re: Arena Mode
Alright I've been playing Arena most of the night and heres some of the conclusions I've made:
- Uber pyro is ineffective. Ubers don't usually come in until the final point capping, and by then most of the time both teams are brought down to 2-4 people. Even with grinding it comes very late.
- Kritz is far more effective, as you can get it before the other team gets uber and take out their medic. It also can cut the other team in half, usually resulting in instawin if used correctly.
- Snipers aren't useful on arena granary. Period.
- 6vs6 is actually a lot of fun.
- Pyros are not as effective as I would of thought them to be. They can't easily ambush teams that are smaller and die quicker. Why, I don't know, but its something I've observed. It might be because teams are more aware of whats going on.
- If we can get it so the server switches between ctf, cp and arena equally and has good time for all then I think its great. Arena is really fresh and fun.
- It isn't a spamfest. Love it.

Re: Arena Mode
I played on an arena server that wasnt laggy like ours was earlier and i noticed the same things.
But I do have an answer for your "pyros arent as effective" thing yoshi:
since the pyro update pyros have been all run straight and mouse1. no ambush tactics, no hit and run. with arena, that is exactly what you have to do. if you have a medic healing a heavy and theyre around a corner, you cant just charge straight in and fire away. you have to circlestrafe corners, light the medic on fire and disappear, rinse and repeat. it might seem tedious, but after two or so passes, the medic is dead and the heavy is hurt. then you can finish off the heavy at will. also, the backburner is supremely effective for ambushing and mowing down and heavy/medic combo from behind in less than 2 seconds.

Re: Arena Mode
Arena mode is great. Had a great time last night playing it with Yoshi and Atra. I think its a must for seeding. The server we played on didnt seem to have any problems.

Re: Arena Mode
But how do you seed when you must kill the server to get back to normal?

Re: Arena Mode
Well I didn't say it was a problem with the pyro class, I said it was more of a problem with the people I saw playing it. I can only account for once where I actually burned to death (I was playing medic). The worst pyros did to my team was they would set half of them to fire then die just to have me put them out 5 seconds later, and since this was arena, we didn't have to worry about him respawning and doing the same thing. Great gamemode.
That's not to say that there aren't good pyros out there. Today I actually saw one using airblast and totally airblasted an uber back into their spawn. That was pretty cool. Another one managed to airblast a medic away, unubering a heavy, giving me a headshot on the heavy.
I was actually playing a lot of kritz medic last night. It was a lot of fun, me and atra had a blast.

Re: Arena Mode
You have to reset the server to change modes? I would have thought Arena would be a gametype like Payload, Control Point, etc. Apparently I was wrong...

Re: Arena Mode
It loads silently, but the server does reconfigure somehow. It's weird, and it seems to hate CoD4.

Re: Arena Mode
Is the match server on a CoD4 server? If not, can't you just switch the two? make the match server the main server, and vice versa?

Re: Arena Mode
One machine hosts two instances of TF2 (Pub, Match) and two instances of CoD4.
