They're supposed to be alternatives. The slowdown does work but it has a dropoff. Basically if theres a scout whos 20 meters away then it barely effects him and you shouldn't expect it to. If he's 5 meters away it WILL work.

The sandwich I thought was a good alternative. It works great in arena. You trade your shotgun for the ability to gain life when needed.

Heavies aren't known for punching. KGB is for fun, period. You might be comparing it to the pyro, but lets be honest, the axtinisher kills in about the same time if not slower than if they just stayed with the flamethrower and held down mouse1 for another 2 seconds.

Yeah the Melee weapons are not really worth any true tactical value because the tradeoff usually means taking more damage than you are dealing. As for the sandwitch, again, not needed if you got a medic, which means the shotgun is much better.

And, natasha's slowdown isn't very noticeable at all. But I find that you can still kill just as fast with it as the sasha so this is still up in the air for me.

Natascha's slowdown isn't that effective by yourself, but try pairing it with a soldier or demoman. Now you're making it harder for classes to avoid the missiles and stickies, especially since the slowdown makes you drop like a rock. You might not get as many points or kills, but you are making it easier for the demos and soldiers to do their work.

edit: Also, the sandvich doesn't help you if you're on the front lines, but if there is a lull (say, you killed everyone) you can use it to get back to full.
