    Reduce server size?

What if we lowered the max players to 18? It's much easier to play tactically with 9v9, and it reduces spam. Not to mention it costs less money. Anyone have an opinion?

Cost is not a factor as far as I know; the server is running CoD4, CoD4, TF2, and TF2. It isn't the common entry-level rental deal.

I can certainly drop it to 18, but I'd much rather the players police themselves. If people are spamming you should be encouraging them to play tacitcally. I dropped it to 22 from 24 for performance's sake -- Lord knows I hate spam but that's no reason to send four more people into random pubs.

It's just hard to object to 4 RED SG's on Dustbowl 3-2, especially if they're locking down the offense. It's tactically smart, but it's not necessarily the most fun. And I'm working on a project to get player inflow going again.

Sounds like demo-demo-sniper time. Yellow helmets won't stop rifle rounds, and demos break guns fast.

Yeah, except for the 7 other guys on RED gunning for you. Including the countersnipers, airblast pyros, and assorted spammers such as soldiers, heavies, and demos.

Damn, sounds like RED successfully defends for a 1-5 score.

That doesn't make it fun though.

You're right. RED should get pwnt every time. brb, setting playercount to 3 and changing the rule to BLU gets the extra man.

I'd still successfully defend. I'm just that good.

But really gentlemen, the amount of people allowed on the server has nothing to do with the amount of people actually on the server. I soundly believe that if there were some way to get Arenas to work on the server we would be 'home free' when it comes to server seeding. 2 people can play arena lumberyard and attract people, because arenas are insanely popular and people PREFER a smaller amount of people.

Short of somehow getting arenas on the server, it's Dustbowl and Goldrush. We just need a solid base of people that'll play when asked, that way when they see there's someone in the server, they'll come and help. Our 'solid base' doesn't really consist of much, currently. Though I have noted a slight improvement as from when I was first able to post seeding announcements, more people come when the almighty TG announcement calls. (it's normally around 3-4, now.) And if those people call THEIR people.. well then we have a full server.

It's about getting the people who play here to give a darn, really.

Also, if we can, we should start inviting people to our forums. If we think someone's enjoyed their time there, or they are exhibiting exceptional teamwork, then we should ask 'em if they'd like to come join us on the forums!

Spam =/= fun, especially in a tactical setting. Lower to a slightly smaller server count to the point of spam being less effective than teamwork, and you have a good number. As is, spamming choke points will win me the round. Why should I even bother using a mic?

    I don't think TF2 was built using 6 v 6 tourney's in mind. However, I agree - just bumping it down to 10 v 10 might help.

=/ How many people have you seen refuse to come to tactical gamer because it was too 'spammy'? And don't make someone up just to prove your point.

Isn't the point that you'll never know, as they didn't want to join that big of a server? I know from experience that if all of my favorites are empty, and only 2 friends are playing (in different servers), I'm more likely to join the one with the lower player-count.

good luck with the plan to repopulate this community. It is surely needing a boost. A couple of weeks ago I sent three days of unanswered seed notices. Hope it works cause it's better when the server is full. I also agree that getting arena mode and rtv going would help as arena is a lot of fun while people fill the server. Anything less than 10vs10 is too little. I have been on those attacking failes db 3-2 and they are frustrating but in the end it was our fault for not adjusting the loadoit and coordinating the ubers. Who do you blame when the defensive team is holding you at cp1 even thought it's been caped. Sometimes if the d team is better in both talent and strategy they win. When they are not then not even 5 sentries will save them

    Re: Reduce server size?

One thing that I notice, especially when playing dustbowl for any extended period of time, is that things can get repetitive, very quickly, when playing with a large amount of people. With smaller amounts, a few different strategies can allow one team to counter another. With larger amounts, it tends to get into a "Set up an offensive base here, build 3 ubers, and all rush in at once."
