To idle or not to idle, that is the question.

So I've just gotten back into the habit of playing TF2 the past 2 weeks and I'm kinda pissed that I've only unlocked one Class specific hat the entire 150 hours I've been playing the game (according to steam) and I've had not so great luck trying to craft hats so I'm wondering about Idling. I know at one point valve took away all the items you received idling, but is there any risk of that now?

Oh and Hi, I'm new to TacticalGamers, I haven't seen an Introduce yourself thread, but I've basically have been looking a very active pc gaming centric forum and this seems to be it.

Playing on servers with tag achievement_idle have no risk of item removal, that may only happen if you use this specific software. There is much luck and other things involved in getting hats, if you had lower play time when hats first came out it seemed that you had higher change of getting them. On the other hand Valve has had couple of days when they've either bugged the drop system or did it because they were so nice (right) when you could get hat drops at 70% (just thinking how many of the players got hat who were on the server atm) change.

And welcome to the forums, tf2 part of TG is less active than during its glory times but we still got couple active players.

The random drop thing hasn't done much for me. Only got the Medic's helmet and the Scottish top hat.

How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable
Seem to me all the uses of this idle.

The issue was in the idle program that simulated a server. Sitting in a server (there are still legal idle servers up) is fine but not really something I do. If you are interested in TF2 with TG, go ahead and add "drbeat71" (without quotes) to your steam friends.

I don't want to hear it. I have 300+ hours played(Need to check again to be sure when I get home). And all I have is the Trophy Belt. Which I got the first day hats were released.

    I don't idle though. Atleast I don't think I do.

Yeah, Valve really needs to fix this.

1000 hours of playing and idling and not a single random drop hat, so save your cries.
Only non event hat I have is from crafting.

achievement_idle is the most played map in TF2. Valve is working on fixing their random drops, possibly with the 100th patch that is coming soon.

Re: To idle or not to idle, that is the question.

It seems like the more hours you play, the less chances you have to get a random drop... I 've got 600+ hours playtime yet no hats 'cept for the haloween ones.

I 've joined idle servers a couple of times and in the beginning I received like 3 items at once after a couple of hours of just spectating. Lately I barely get anything so there 's really no point anymore.

Got two refined metals so far and a couple of class tokens, but I 'm saving up for 4 refined metals so I can get all the hats of one class at once. I would 've already had it if I hadn't deleted so many items because I thought I had no more space in my backpack (that was before you could craft and before the update that gave you more backpacks...)

I wish they would make it so playing pyro would give you a greater chance of pyro drops, playing solider would give you a greater chance of solider drops, etc.

Yeah, I've recently put in 500 hours of idling in, I've gotten a handful of hats out of it, and I ctually got my second random hat drop since April last year. So I guess I've had a better time getting hats now.

Re: To idle or not to idle, that is the question.

I 've gotten my first random hat drop this weekend and it was for the one class that I never play... the sniper .

Tbh, I don't bother to idle anymore and I don't really care about the hats anymore... why would they give me a hat for a class that I 've played as less than 5 hours???

Re: To idle or not to idle, that is the question.

Looks like there will be no more need to idle:

    * Previously, we rolled randomly at intervals to see if you got an item drop. Now we roll to determine when your next item drop will occur. So you're guaranteed to find items at fairly regular intervals. The bulk of drop complaints we've received in the past have been from players having unlucky streaks, where they didn't find any items for weeks. That won't be possible now.
    * We've significantly increased the rate at which item drops occur, compared to the previous average interval.
    * There's now a maximum amount of playtime per week in which you get item drops. Playing beyond that amount won't find any more items. The amount varies, but if you play an hour or so a day you're good. Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine.

What are the net effects of these changes? Here's the quick summary:

    * If you're an idler, you're going to find fewer items than you were prior to this change. Sorry. On the bright side, there's less reason to idle, because it won't earn more than players who are playing regularly.
    * Everyone else will find items more frequently, and with greater regularity.

We're still thinking about how to allow you to influence your drops. When we see discussions on the forums, people often ask why we don't tie it to some in-game performance (like your scoreboard position, or number of kills, etc). Many players understand that if we did this, idle servers would simply change into servers running plugins that generate those in-game events frequently (as we saw in the Soldier & Demoman WAR!).

There's another side of it that we care about just as much, which is the message it would send to all the players who don't want to idle. Any in-game performance metric we chose would result in there being specific maps, classes, tactics, and so on that resulted in more drops. We really don't want that to happen. When it's simply playtime, you're free to play the game however you like. If you love Payload, you can play Payload maps without worrying about whether you're earning less drops than the guys playing Arena maps. Community mapmakers don't have to worry about whether their maps earn item drops fast enough. Similarly, server operators can configure their servers however they like, without worrying about reducing the rate at which their players are earning drops. In short, while it's far from perfect, not tying to in-game performance is a lot less poisonous to your minute-to-minute game experience.
These guys really know what they 're doing... unlike most devs.

Thumbs up to Valve for not ruining gameplay with achievements, yet keeping this game alive with frequent updates!

While this drop system is better, getting one item an hour (my experience so far) is still too little.

I would love every half hour or maybe even 45 minutes. Or keep it at an hour and you can't earn duplicate weapons. That would be sweet!
