Re: Impression?
Besides the quick re-stealth ability of the spy, I can find no real faults with this game. Well... except that my work PC locks up all the time playing it.

Re: Impression?
The spy is utterly broke. Game breakingly broke. Other then that the game is pretty fun.

Re: Impression?
The medic brings back old memories of the repair gun in Tribes....God I loved that game.
But I have to say that Valve has got a winner here. I guess it was 10 years well spent.
Too much fun! It's all in the Reflexes.

Re: Impression?
I think the spy is only game-breaking when FF is turned on.
I enjoy the smaller servers so much more. 6 vs 6 requires players to pick their classes in a complimentary way and work together. 20+ is pretty much FFA.

Re: Impression?
At first glance I was not impressed by the game in any way shape or form. After giving it about 2 hours it started to grow on me.
The look and feel of the game is similar to the original, but with everything turned up to max, the cartooney environment managed to put a smile on my face throughout my gaming session. It is a welcome change to the ultra realistic feel every new game tries to strive for.
My biggest worry going into the game was the lack of grenades. It took me some time to get used to, but the side affect of having some teammates to rely on is worth the trade off I think. I see nothing really broken, although the spy may be a bit of a handful on an ff server.
I don see this game having real long term potential unless valve or the community gets behind it and do some changes. Having said that, it reignited my interest in TF once more, and it should keep me playing for a couple months at least.

Re: Impression?
You guys have me intrigued about TF2. I haven't really followed it much until now. I'm not buying Orange Box but might consider buying TF2 standalone, looks like it's $29.99 so not bad.
I've been playing the Quake Wars demo but it's just not growing on me and with my current machine (P4 2.66Ghz, 1GB RAM, 256MB 7800GS AGP) it's not the prettiest thing around. I figure I have no chance in hell with Crysis, and it looks like my machine almost meets the suggested (not minimum for once!) specs for TF2.

Re: Impression?
TF2 is beautiful and smooth on my not-quite-enough-for-PoE machine. Being like a cartoon has its advantages.
The balance is so good on this game, that you can see it right away in the first game you play. It is never impossible to break a defense, yet it is never impossible to defend.
As for longevity, I can't see it lasting any longer than Counterstrike.Peace through fear... since 1947!

Re: Impression?
You found the look and feel to be similar to the original? Wow. I started playing Team Fortress the very week it came out for Quake and I don't think I stopped until Half-Life came out. XLII used to run TF and LMCTF servers back in those days on Quakespy. I don't think it's got the look and feel of the original at all. In fact, the only thing that seems similar to the original are a small number of the class abilities and some of the overall map layouts.
Heck, I don't even see it as being that similar to TFC, which was never really a good replacement for the original TF.
What changes do you see that need to be made in order to give it long term potential?

Re: Impression?
What I meant by look and feel is that when I hopped in it still felt like TFC (ya I meant TFC not TF
) to me. Obviously the graphics changed, and the gameplay is different with the disappearance of grenades, but to me its not a huge departure from TFC.
As far as changes, I don't know at this point. Have to play it some more to see what really gets under my skin. At first glance I would like them to add some kind of secondary abilities for everyone. When I first hopped in I noticed just about everyone has some meele weapon and a shotgun, which made me cringe. Need spice up the classes a little bit more I think.

Re: Impression?
I found myself right-clicking frequently looking for some sort of magical special ability. I don't really care about the loss of regular grenades, but I certainly do miss the EMP grenades!
One thing to remember is this IS in fact a beta. If someone is looking for perfect balance and flawless features they shouldn't be playing a beta. I'm not saying you fall into that category, but I am often amused at people's frustrations with beta software when there are bugs, imbalances, or lack of functionality.
