Re: Impression?
Getting TF2 at $45 is a good deal for me. PC games usually come out at $59.99 retail in Canananada

Re: Impression?
I really suggest anyone who hasn't take the time to listen to the developer commentary, it's pretty insightful and to me personally cement's why valve does make the best games.

Re: Impression?
So when I make this purchase, how big is the beta download? It's annoying that I have to download it to my home PC, which has a far slower connection than my work. I'm wondering if I can get it by playtime tonight. Although I am slated to participate in a massive ArmA event this evening, and the PR patch just came out earlier today... wow, so much going on!
I guess it's also worth asking - has anyone recently sampled what speeds Steam is delivering on these downloads this week? I seem to recall my HL2 download (via Steam) only hitting about 150kbps max.

Re: Impression?
I downloaded at around 940kbps last night. Steam seems to have come a long way since HL2

Cool, I'll see if I can't load it up and try it late this evening.

The commentary system was a great idea, and I always look forward to listening to them with their new games.I really suggest anyone who hasn't take the time to listen to the developer commentary, it's pretty insightful and to me personally cement's why valve does make the best games.

Re: Impression?
I remember back in the days when PC games came in real boxes and had real manuals instead of pamphlets, there would often be a "Designer's Notes" section in the manual that would let you know why a feature was implemented the way it was, or why things were left out.
The commentary in TF2 was a very nice feature - it gave lots of insight about the art style and the game design - both of which they pretty much nailed perfectly, IMHO. Designer's notes have now been brought to the 21st century, and I'd definitely like to see this in more games in the future.BF2 POE2: NC_Tarheel

When you can't run, you walk. When you can't walk, you crawl and when you can't do that, you get someone to carry you.

Re: Impression?
Back up with the impressions. I have to say that the shine has worn off for me. Some of the maps are already degenerating into set plans and nobody wins. I'm not sure that with a determined and set defense in 2forts that anyone can ever win. The pitched choke point battles in other maps are just getting stale already. Unless one team is clearly dominating those 5 CP maps are being won less and less. Alot of the skill is just being able to spam rockets and grenades well. Hopefully with more maturety we will get more variety, but I think it's just going to be the opposite.

I think the real fun will be when the user made maps start showing up.

Re: Impression?
Now that I've had a chance to play some I can really post an impression.
This is literally an updated TFC. At first that seems like a 'duh,' but I can't recall ever playing a sequel that was so much like the original. Most all of the same limitations are still there, the gameplay is the same (fun chaos), and the maps are exactly the same - just slightly different dimensions. I think this is cool and uncool at the same time. I'm confused. I never expected Valve to re-invent the wheel, but I also didn't really expect them to just shine up the old wheel. I do realize that new maps will add some flavor to the game, but the underlying framework (characters and gameplay) is really no different from the original.
Not to say it isn't fun, and obviously any fan of the original TFC will love this. But there is about as much room for strategy in this as there was in the first - not too much - because even the best laid plan can be blown to bits or lit on fire very quickly.
Oh, and the medic class is so incredibly useful but so underplayed.

Re: Impression?
I find there to be far less similarities. For one, acrobatics (couldnt think of a better word) played a huge role in TFC, with the removal of rocket and conc jumping gameplay is slowed considerably. Additionally, I don't think I've seen a single person crack jumping. Those are aspects that I have always kind of defined TFC for me, and I'm glad to see them go in this game.
Additionally, the classes have been trimmed down to fit into more defined roles. Again, that has a huge impact on the feel of the game. It makes me feel limited to what I can do with a given class, and thats a good thing. I used to be that if I got bored with my current role of defending in a TFC round, I could just switch roles and go grab a flag without having to change classes, and be fairly successful at it. That is simply impossible in TF2.
If you changed the names of all the classes and weapons brought in a new set of maps so that there was nothing left as a reminder of TFC, it would be a completely different game to me.
In general, I find it to be FAR superior to TF/TFC.
