TF2 doesn't launch
Argh. I can't even launch TF2. Tried re-starting STEAM, restarting my PC, even setting different resolutions. Nothing. Read a couple forums where people mentioned including the string "-window" (or "-windowed") in the Launch Options area, and neither of those work.
Anyone else have a similar issue or heard of a fix?
My specs:
AMD 2600+
1.5 gigs RAM
ATI X850 XT
Widescreen Monitor (1360x768)
Thanks.
EDIT: Tried Zoopy's suggestion and still no go.Beatnik

Re: TF2 doesn't launch
Did you redownload the game first and then try that, or just try that first? I'm on XP, and tried the comp. mode thing but no dice.
I have noticed in the 'full screen' steam menu that after I click on the game, the status briefly flashes to 'Downloading 100%' before my desktop icons come back and nothing happens.Beatnik

Re: TF2 doesn't launch
Beatnik,
Are you getting an error message or it just won't launch?
Last night, after the game went live everyone was having the issue where you tried to launch the game, got the launch message and then it just did nothing.
They patched it overnight and that supposedly cleared it up. Try verifying your files....see if it just missed the last patch?
I was having a wierd issue where I kept getting an "HL2.exe has stopped working" message and it wouldn't let me in game.
For some odd reason, I opened HL2 and re-set my settings, then tried TF2 and it worked ever since.....talk about strange.
*edit* Just for a shot in the dark, do you use Windows Blinds? If you do, set TF2 as an exception inside the program so WB won't try and skin it. I've had more than a few games not launch back when I was using that program until if figured out that it doesn't play nice with games because it keeps trying to skin them and the games aren't having it. After I set my games as non skinnable, I had no more problems.
I'd say it's a long shot that that's your issue, but sometimes it's the little things that trip you up. Hope you get it figured out. It's all in the Reflexes.

Re: TF2 doesn't launch
Thanks. There's no error message, just...nothing. I'll try for a patch, although I already re-downloaded the whole game. No Windowblinds, no firewall on at the moment.
EDIT: It seems to be related to the graphics card or driver. On some resolutions (1024x768 & 1360x768) the screen goes blank like it's loading, then back to desktop. On others (800x600) nothing at all happens.
I'm stumped. And grumpy.

Re: TF2 doesn't launch
Thing that seems to work for some people is a complete re-install of your video drivers.
latest Cat drivers are here: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
Also, use Driver Cleaner if you don't already: http://www.drivercleaner.net/
Amazing program that's cleaned up a ton of driver issues for me.
Outside of that, I'm at a loss. Been looking around to see if I could find anything for you and Santa but there's no "Official" fix yet. Cept they've recommend driver re-installs. What Zoopy posted has worked for some, but it's real hit and miss.
If you've re-installed your drivers already, but haven't used DC then give that a go. If you've done both.....drink. A lot.
It's all in the Reflexes.

Re: TF2 doesn't launch
Thanks. Yeah my plan now after pouring thru the steam forums is to update my drivers. Didn't get a chance to before bedtime last night.
One other thing I noticed is that I also couldn't launch Fortress Forever. That's definitely consistent with some of the 3D driver grumblings I've read on the steam forums. Which may or may not be related to the Quake Wars hotfix I grabbed last week. We'll see. I'm determined to play TF2 and/or Fortress Forever tonight!Beatnik

Re: TF2 doesn't launch
Finally got the stars aligned. I had to roll back my driver to Catalyst 7.8. Then I had to load in DX8 with a forced resolution. Whatever. It works. And still looks great in DX8.

Thanks for the help. This was a frustrating 5 hours of troubleshooting.Beatnik
