Castle_3

Hi all,

So far I'm really enjoying the rotation. I really like Grand canyon and Turbine, they seem very thought out. Mach3 is also very cool.

Unfortunately Im just not diggin Castle. To me it doesn't feel laid out very well, it's imbalanced, some of the maps are poorly designed as in requiring 15-30 seconds of running just to reach the first point for example. The pacing feels very off. Compared to the stock maps and the other custom maps we've been playing Castle feels a little amateurish. Anyone agree or disagree?

I wouldn't mind if it left the rotation

I like the fact that a solid push can break through the front, and right into the control point, but without good teamwork, it can be difficult. I do like the up to 30 sec of running at the beginning (usually blue has an engi or 2) because it gives RED snipers a chances to stop the initial push from winning the game.
Who is imbalanced for?

Castle is a good map, but it takes time to grow on you.

Re: Castle_3

When you look at castle, it's actually just as balanced as dustbowl, if not more so. The early caps are easy to get with solid teamwork, but get progressively harder as you go on.

The problem is really this: it's not a standard map that's been played for the past decade. It takes some getting used to and until players work the map inside and out, it's going to have some issues. Try it a few times with some TG regs on, it might grow on you.

Re: Castle_3

Thanks! Really great feedback. I'll definitely play it some more and try to uncover the strategies. I guess because it's really different than most of the other maps out there it does take some time to appreciate it.

Re: Castle_3

Hi,

Can I put a vote or request out there to have Castle3 taken out of the active rotation?

My subjective reason is that of all the maps in the rotation I dislike it the most.

My somewhat objective reasons are that it's overall not that popular in the community so it's not really known and it also seems to be a server momentum breaker alot so for example the server is humming along full and Castle comes up and half of the server splits (including myself at times). Ive noted this happening a few times.

Anyways, just my opinion. I always oblige to the consensus of our great community.

I'm always looking to rework the map rotation. Right now I'm still checking trends on the server and have a few other things to consider. But, I'll keep your request in mind.

Re: Castle_3

...I like Castle 3.

I haven't seen it clear out the server except when it's already really late. How has it fared in the map popularity polls?

Code:
ctf_2fort 9	47.37%
cp_dustbowl 16	84.21%
ctf_turbine_v3 12	63.16%
cp_gravelpit 15	78.95%
ctf_mach4 11	57.89%
tc_hydro 10	52.63%
cp_castle3 12	63.16%
cp_well 7	36.84%
ctf_impact 8	42.11%
cp_science 6	31.58%
cp_grand_canyon 7	36.84%
cp_warpath 8	42.11%
12 is certainly strong compared to known room-clearers like Warpath, Grand Canyon (T_T), and Well.

While Castle 3 isn't a favorite on every server in the world, the only map that is is 2Fort. Should we go 2Fort 24/7? The regs seem to like Castle 3 except for Pony and I'll just stab him until he learns to like it.

It's certainly better than Dustbowl. I F10 on dustbowl anymore.

Warpath may fare better now with the adjusted timers. I imagine folks started clearing out of Warpath in anticipation of the endless rounds....

Re: Castle_3

Cool analysis, Magna. It definitely does have a strong showing on the server. With right tactics employed it does become a good map. It's still growing on me.

It's probably worth noting I never played the original Team Fortress so all the maps are (relatively) new to me.

For the record, Castle isn't a TFC map from what I remember.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Castle at all.

If nothing else... it's bland and not visually interesting. I don't feel it flows too well, either. My two cents, anyway :P

Dok, your two centavos are an idiot. Don't make me get my passport and come down there. You're not on Castle to sightsee, you're there to get stabbed by me. Besides, you are/were a 24/7 2Fort server player. That's like the VIP section of TF2.

Thats right it isnt I believe. Being new to TF however means that all the maps are shiny and new, so for me I don't give a particular bias as to an old map from TFC and a new map created for TF2. I really like Turbine and Mach4 for example, even though they are made my modders they just feel tight and professional and detailed as if they could have come with the original game and I wouldn't have known the difference. My impression of Castle is not exactly the same.
