Re: Tactics: The Pyro
A pyro is focused on ambushing. A pyro out in the open without his team WILL get taken down with minimal effort. And by choosing the flare gun, you're basically getting a CHANCE to disable a sniper from range in exchange for any sort of killing power that the shotgun gives you (which is a lot for a pyro).

Re: Tactics: The Pyro
No. Pyro is a short range class given the ability to defend himself against a sniper in a pinch.
Sniper is a long range class with low health.

Re: Tactics: The Pyro
Who uses the flare gun a majority of their time as pyro? I know that the vast majority of people on the Steam Forums don't. And you can skew how you look at a class, but all that does is make your point moot. "A spy is a class that runs at people head-on and prays for a facestab." "A soldier is a class that shoots his feet." "A sniper is a class that points and clicks." GG

And to make up for the sniper's low health he has to be able to take out most targets before they are able to get up close and take him out. Out of all the classes, I would kind of expect the master of short range to have the least defensive capability against a sniper.

Re: Tactics: The Pyro
I do. Not because it's very good at killing things, but because I find it very amusing to ignite people and watch them run away. It's also really helpful in deterring longer range classes from blowing me to bits before I can close in. People don't run from the shotgun, but they run from fire. It's not that hard to dodge flare anyway unless you're really close to the pyro, in which case you are already flamethrower bait.
The only problem I see with pyro right now it the extra health from the backburner. The air blast gives you a chance to not be endlessly juggled by soldiers or be helpless against a wall of stickies and the backburner crits give you some major killing power in an ambush. The crits and extra health are too much though. It leads to the current trend stupid pyros running around with mouse1 held down because they've got so much health they can't die and so many crits that they don't have to bother with aiming or actually being any good. Without the extra health the stupid pyros will either have to learn to ambush people (in other words, stop being stupid) or get mowed down when they run headfirst into a crown of enemies like everyone else.

Did you ever stop to think about why Valve decided to buff Pyro into absurdity? Stupid people don't get over being stupid. And if you are uncertain of the stupid-quotient of Valve's customer base, you are invited to have a look at their forums.
