Found a new map you think TG:TF2 should host?

Well, we're interested. Up until TF2 goes gold and valve releases the SDK, map selection will probably be limited. Until then, I'm sure a few third-party maps will hit the Internet (I know of one already).

If you think a map has TG potential, let us know by posting a thread containing some information. Proper formatting isn't essential, but it will help us expedite any preliminary testing. Be sure to include the map name in the title of your thread and check to make sure no one has already posted about the map.

Include the suggested player count of the map. Also, is this map still in beta? How polished is it? Are there gameplay issues you've noticed? Do you know some other servers that run it? Does the map creator have plans to update? How dedicated is he to this map?

I'm considering using the second TF2 server to test out new maps on before moving them over to the first TF2 server, but even then, we don't want to bring down a server just because we've got two of them.

Maps will likely be tested on the whim of an admin who has the blessing of the players on the server, but I also have plans to take a night or two to dedicate to play-testing new maps. If the map is good enough, it may even make it into the standard rotation, so keep your eyes on the look-out and let us know.

After some advice from WhiskeySix, I've decided to unlock this thread for discussion.

question : I have heard that if a server is hosting a map then you dont have to log out and go find the map on the internet, download and install. Instead you can choose to download it from the server there and then (ingame) is that right ?

Almost certain thats how it works. I know for other steam games thats how they did it. We shouldnt take a hit server population wise (unless the download is just too big), so the only consideration is how good the map is.

Yup.

The only new map I know of is CTF_Mach

Although it seems small, probably a 6v6 map.

Steam has HTTP download abilities built in. Essentially, the map would be hosted on TG webspace (FAST) and the server would direct you to Download it there.

Once we get our first custom map, I plan to setup the HTTP link.

The only trick is that it's still a rather large download. Yes, the speed is good, but these nextgen maps check in an order of magnitude larger than their predecessors.

While you don't HAVE to grab a map before loading it ingame, if possible, I'd still try to.

Re: Found a new map you think TG:TF2 should host?

Found a server yesterday running cp_lazytown which was a decently done 5 CP map. It seemed ok balance-wise but I honestly didn't play it enough to make a definitive judgment one way or the other. The maps size is 14 mb and it downloaded in under 2 minutes.

I was able to play a full round on it with a full server. It was quite a refreshing break from the standard six maps. It is kind of a sniper fest map with large open areas. You can still get some good gameplay though around certain areas.

Try and keep the responses in here general if you don't mind. I've setup a thread in the forum for lazytown. Give all the info you can in there. Thanks.

Grandcanyon Marathon Beta 3. 15MB HEUG when decompressed. Rapidfail link.
Pulled this off of a random pub. It's really big and the doors will be pinned shut if Larry, Moe, and Curly are on one side while Bevis and Butthead are on the other, none of them realising if they back off they'll re-trigger the door, but played with people posessed of brain stems, it might work out okay.

Re: Found a new map you think TG:TF2 should host?

I found the updated (b5) version and it's ready to go on the server. I'm hoping to test it tonight.

ctf_freezers_v2
A good map with lots of routes to the intel. To get to the intel, you have to go through freezer rooms, which deal damage per second while you're in them.

Re: Found a new map you think TG:TF2 should host?

If this is one that I played while pubbing once, it felt very lame to me. Then again, I was losing juice to the freeze zone, then I grab the case which means engineer lead up my bum. I took a wrench on the way across, too. So yeah, I've got 4HP to make it home with. lol?
