Game Recorders
The best of the free recorders is ...
I would advise trying two, xfire and wegame (free at half screen recording). I advise playing at max screen res eg 1920*1080, recording at half screen 960*540, then rendering up to 1280*1080 for youtube.
The best of the paid for recorders is ...
I would advise buying fraps, its consistently reliable across all games and is consistently updated by the fraps team. Fraps also is great for recording all sounds including you own voice. It is also worth looking at playclaw
Below is the complete list of recorders, many offer a free trail version, so give a few a go and compare the results
FastCapPro
GameCam
ZDSoft Game Recorder
HyperCam
dxtory
Works with punkbuster eg Battlefield
Fraps * fraps is my recommendation for recording all game sounds including your own voice see this thread
WeGame (free) **
Xfire (free)
Growler GunCam
PlayClaw (serious contender to fraps for recording all voices including your own, see here)
For Mac
Screenflow
Snapz Pro
iShowU
* (FRAPS) when recording with fraps the FPS is reduced to the setting in fraps, so record at 45 FPS and then edit and render to 30 FPS
** (WEGAME) by default screenshots in wegame client are automatically uploaded to wegame website, so go into settings and set it to manual uploadLast edited by Exploding_Silver; 09-25-2011 at 12:29 PM. Reason: added playclaw

Re: Game Recorders
no it's not... and it's a shame that people can't use the free version...or pay the dude, yes one guy who made and keeps this great program updated and free once you buy one time...
OK, off soap box...
If you don't want to use any of those programs, and/or don't want to use the computers resources for video capture...here is a work-around, and it's legal...
Most of todays cards have a monitor output and at least an S video output... the newer nice onces even have more options... if you have a simple digital video camcorder... you can usually hook the S video out of your graphic card into the input of your video camcorder, then either use a split for the audio one into your speakers and the other into the camcorder... and then simply activate the second monitor to "clone" the first and play your game, hit record on your camcorder and there you have it video/audio capture without ANY hit to your computer resources...
to load it into your PC...just connect your camcorder to your PC via USB or firewire... capture just like any video...can use the free Microsoft Movie Maker.
just FYI.Magnum

Re: Game Recorders
Wouldn't Microsoft Movie Maker deny you the use of non-Encumbered codecs? Fail.
Remove GameCam from the list; their website explicitly says that Source games do not record successfully.

Re: Game Recorders
I remember seeing also something that GameCam doesnt like punkbuster.

Meaning that if you want to record something with it, you'd need to be in singleplayer.|TG| Kebab-Kastike reporting for duty. | Why? Tubes! The internet is tubes!

Re: Game Recorders
WeGame is great. It's free, has HD capture for movie makers or just regular for people who just want to record for the fun of it. With Fraps I get way too much lag. For some reason though I am not able to record sound at all on any recording program. It comes out in horrible quality. Does anyone know the reason for this?

Re: Game Recorders
Should I turn the Wave sound all the way off or just much lower? And what does the Wave sound actually do?

Re: Game Recorders
I agree, WeGame is very nice.
Tried recording some CSS in HD mode and it was very nice, although the file was huge for just only a few minutes.Acreo Aeneas

Re: Game Recorders
I tried wegame in Crysis once and it lowered my framerates even more than fraps. fraps is a sexy beast....

Re: Game Recorders
new recorder
playclaw
costs 20 bucks
minor updates free, major updates are not, they dont support dx10, so thats the next major update, so if you buy now then it will probably only ever be for a dx9 version
my testing showed its not very good
> does not record full screen without crashing fps right down
> there claim of using dual cor technology for efficiency didnt seem to amke a difference
> even at half screen the rendering at the far end of view was slowed right down, as in on the view horizon you could see building popping into view, it was much more noticable thatn normal play
> overall I wouls say the performance was down compared to other recorders

Re: Game Recorders
I know there aren't a lot of mac users here, but I thought I'd post a mac game recorder in case anyone's interested: Screenflow
I find it user-friendly enough for me (not too tech-savvy). Only downside is the price at $99.
I tried two other recorders Snapz Pro and iShowU, but I couldn't get them to record any video from BF2142. I'm on a macbook pro, so people on other macs may be able to get them to work.

Re: Game Recorders
I not only record my shooters but also my sports games so i need something that can work in both online settings. I also need a program that i can do good looking screenshots from. Usually i use gamecam but i was giving wegame a try. the filming was good but i had issues doing screenshots. the results were not even close to acceptable to me, they looked like color negatives. with me file size is also a concern. what is recommended for people without a huge amount of HD space (until i get my pc upgraded)
