Infantry/Heavy Artillery strategy

It seems like every single person I play (which hasn't been anyone from TG) uses a strategy of making as many light infantry as possible, and then saving whatever's left over for heavy artillery. It's extremely effective and annoying, but I can't seem to find a counter for it. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Infantry/Heavy Artillery strategy

I'm playing one with AirRanger where he did that, but the 3 map chokepoints allowed me to dam the gap with a mix of raiders and a few strategic light inf, and then I saved my money to buy heavy tanks and heavy arti. I'm in the process of pushing back, and it looks like he's rethought his infantry flood.

Re: Infantry/Heavy Artillery strategy

Interesting game, although he didn't purely go light infantry and heavy artillery.

The problem, as I see it, is that the best counters to light infantry are raiders or heavy tanks. 1 raider will not take out 3 light infantry even though they cost about the same, so raiders aren't really a counter. Heavy tanks take zero damage from light infantry, but they also won't kill them faster than your opponent can make them, so they get ripped to shreds by the heavy artillery.

The point is to rotate your forces to the back for repairs, something it's easy to do with raiders.

I have found that raiders can be a good way to knock out heavy arty, if you can position them close enough. The arty cannot attack back if you are inside their range.

The problem is there is usually an infantry screen 2 hexes out. You can't break through it fast enough to get inside their range.

Re: Infantry/Heavy Artillery strategy

I stumbled upon the wall of infantry w/ heavy arty backup early on and have used it quite a bit. There have been a few counters though most counters are with pro units. If you're playing with the standard units then infantry+heavy arty is very effective. It becomes a chess match to see who will make a mistake first and open themselves up.

With standard units you'll typically have to have your own wall of infantry protection with heavy arty in the back. Have some raiders ready for a quick move. When the opponent opens himself up, use the infantry and raiders to strike. Plan your attacks so you can block counters on the raiders or possibly get your raider a shot at their arty.

That's what I thought (and feared).

I think I'm done with this game. Sigh.

I was so proud of myself for the first half of that game. After I failed to grab that base, I deflated and never could really recover. Good Game!

Re: Infantry/Heavy Artillery strategy

It would have worked for you Ranger, but the map was too closed off. I was able to force you to come to me on my terms while I built up heavy stuff. You played VERY well, and if it makes you feel better it's the only game I've won in a while
