i was deer hunting during launch, the ps3 just came out the week before, and i was thinking to myself;
"huh, i wonder if nintendo will ever have a system launch like that again, ehh, i doubt it. but i cant wait till dark so i can run walmart and grab one for myself...."

few hours later:

"hello kind walmart electronics department employee, id like to buy a Wii." i say.
" uh, we were sold out at 12:30" he says.
"dang, i missed it by 5 hours" i respond.
"no, you missed it by <5 second pause> 15 hours" he exclaims.
i look at my watch, "you mean 17 hours right?"
<no response>

I went on launch day to Zellers when it opened and ended up being number 6 of 6 in line to get a Wii. I drove off and laughed at the 50+ lines at Best Buy and Futureshop one block down with all their tents.

(employee) Yes plenty.

Proof enough for me.

But seriously he could have been refering to the DS. God that thing is an unstoppable juggernaut. The PSP is a "success". Games don't seem to sell well but the system itself sells well and it's the most successful non-Nintendo handheld. Keeping all that in mind it is just completely overshadowed by the DS.

The Wii has only been out for a year but I believe it's the fastest selling console ever. I fully expect it to match or break PS2 user base numbers.

The weekly sales figures on VG Chartz shows that Nov. 06 - Dec. 06 has the Wii selling more overall. Although, the 360 did sell a lot during the holidays since their sales rate doubled. This year, the figures show that the Wii crushed everything despite not meeting demand. It was basically Nintendo making as many consoles as possible yet still not meeting demand. It's not that they made very few consoles and didn't meet demand.

I saw one just before xmas. But it wasn't on a shelf. It was in the electronics department of Target, in the middle of their camera display/cash register island. They were holding it for a lady that said, "ohmigawd, ohmigawd, could you please hold this for me while I run out to my car to get my purse?" She came sprinting back into the store just as I was asking the saleslady if that Wii was for sale.

Wow you just have bad luck (or maybe bad timing). I got one for my wife and I walked in Target early Sunday morning and they have a whole bunch of them there. Of course, it may have helped that I was buying one for her Birthday in November and I showed up at the store right as they were opened to the buying public....oh, and having a co-worker who knew someone that works at Target to let me know when they were receiving new shipments didn't hurt either
