Re: Wii - first impressions?

Hold on, does it only come with that wii remote controller or can you still use a regular controller to play Zelda with? I'm confused. How do you use that wiimote to play Zelda?

Re: Wii - first impressions?

The Wii comes with a wiimote and a nunchuck (the little thing with the thumbstick and two triggers). The wiimote itself has an A button on top, a B trigger on bottom, a D pad, a -, +, and home button, and 1 and 2 buttons.

With the nunchuck, you move link with the thumbstick, target with the z trigger, and look around in 1st person with the c button.

With the wiimote, you talk to your helper (Midna) with the up d-pad, you assign items to B with the other three, you use the item with the B button, the A button is context sensitive (open doors and such), you access inventory with the -, you access equiptment/options/saves with the +, the 1 puts the map up, and the 2 toggles the minimap.

Fighting: you get your sword out by shaking the wiimote. Shaking it different ways and while moving different directions and when locked on vs not locked on produces different swings. A is still the power strike, and for the spin attack you shake the nunchuck side to side. The game also has seven 'hidden' attacks that you can learn, such as a killing blow for stunned opponents (power strike a stunned opponent), or a shield blow which makes enemies recoil (flicking the nunchuck forward).

It may sound a little weird, but now that I'm used to it it works even better than the old control scheme. Not once in TP have I made a single mistake because of shoddy controls, which isn't the case with the other two 3d zeldas. However, should you be wary of this set-up, I'm fairly sure that plugging a gamecube controller into the top might work.

I use my kids as the justification for ALL of my toy purchases. I bought my daughter a Lego Robotics set when she was 2.

Yes! I know that there's some cheesy acting in this video, but I can totally see the Wii promoting exactly such cheesiness! I can't wait to get one!

If I can get 4 drunks in a room swinging those controllers around playing Super Smash Bros, it will be worth a whole lot more to me than anything else a console could do.

Edit: It will support 4-player, right?
Smash Brothers won't be using the remote. It requires the Classic controller, which is sold separately.

I'm hoping for a nice Black Friday shipment so I can pick one up!

Bomberman? Will there be a Wii version of Bomberman?

I'm not sure. If there is, it might not use the Wii remote either. Well, I guess there could be a 3D version that would use the remote.

The big problem is getting one. It's been quite a popular console in Ottawa!

Just make sure that you hold onto your controller!

Re: Wii - first impressions?

Anyone else besides me think the folks at Xbox have something else up their sleeve to pwn the market even more? Now there's XNA of course, but I have the feeling there's gonna be more. And my feeling leans towards some kind of special interface that may perhaps go further then the Wii's. Perhaps some kind of VR interface, i dunno.
It's really a shame u cant have Wii's functionality with the power and codeability of the Xbox

There's no doubt that if the Wii controller is popular, variations of it will come out for other platforms, even the PC.

Technically, Wii technology is REALLY old. It's just the implementation that's new. They basically use IR tracking (simple enough), only the twist is it detects where ur pointing the remote by looking, instead of simply flashing a light from the screen at it to determine where u pointing. They also use accelerometers and gyrometers to determine acceleration and position in space. To tidy it all up it's got sensor tracking to determine the position of every remote in space - i assume by utilizing all the technologies in one.

And of course to get all this info. to the console and back it uses Bluetooth technology.

As for the PC, all this stuff has been developed loooong ago... mostly for hardcore sim-heads. Nintendo really just crammed it all into one cheap, swanky package. Smartly, they bought up most of the companies that produce a lot of this tech. also - which is why they can sell us Wii's for $250. Makes you feel STUPID to go out and by an IR Head Tracker system for $500 doesnt it?

<sigh> amazing the price difference... this is why I like to build my own electronics.

Re: Wii - first impressions?

Hehe. My friends are really excited about it and a few are going to come over to my house later this week to try it out. All I have is Wii sports and Zelda right now, but that should be enough to let them try it out to see if they want to get one too. It's gonna be fun comparing the reactions of 20 somethings to the console to that of a 9 year-old girl's.
