Re: Wii - first impressions?

I just finished Twilight Princess in about 32 hours. I either missed half the game, or am just twice as good as the average playtester. Objectively, it's better than Orcarina, but it isn't as much of a leap forward. And there are a number of things that Majora's Mask does a lot better, presentation/implication wise.

Re: Wii - first impressions?

I just finished the Sand Temple in Twilight Princess. I could probably estimate accurately with 20-22 hours in the past two days on the Wii. It's terribly addicting.

Hmm, 4 pages talking about it. How many pages before we get a subforum added in the Console Gaming forum?

There was some chat about forming a TG_Wii guild. Unfortunately the net capability isnt quite ready for the Wii yet and there arent any multiplayer games. Nevertheless, it's easy enough to start building up ur address books. I believe there will be some multiplayer games out before x-mas (gotta go check the website). There's also talk of utilizing the mic on the wiimote (i'm pretty sure it's a 2-way system... not just a speaker)

As for the other consoles; the only one worth doing something organized for is the 360.

Re: Wii - first impressions?

Microphones and speakers are the same, just optimized differently. Which may explain the low-quality speaker, if it is indeed optimized to be between a mic and a speaker.

Re: Wii - first impressions?

There's actually a neat implementation of the mic/speaker in "Red Steel" multiplayer. I havent played it yet, but supposedly you make an in-game phone call, put the speaker to your ear and get a secret mission to be completed BEFORE your opponent. Whoever completes it first wins. Very creative IMO.

The other thing I like about it is your objects make sounds FROM the object. This is a subtle but important function that people take for granted. Take Baseball for instance, when you swing the bat you hear a WHOOSH sound coming from the remote, not just the screen. Your mind is then more prone to believe you're swinging a bat then just some stupid remote. Same for swords, guns, etc.

In these regards, having a speaker in the remote instead of just a boom-mic on someone's head made a LOT of sense.

Re: Wii - first impressions?

Unfortunately, it's a crappy speaker, so I actually find it more jarring than immersing, most of the time.

But even if it had a good speaker, I could only see it working well if you had surround sound. Otherwise, if every other noise from everywhere around you came from your T.V., why should only the object you're holding come from somewhere else?

Re: Wii - first impressions?

For the moment, I'm the only one of my friends who was lucky enough to get the console at launch. Every Wednesday we have a game night and the first meeting we had, we played the Wii for 4hrs straight! And we only played Wii Sports!

Re: Wii - first impressions?

I really like the four player 2v2 Madden. That's pure, unadulterated fun, especially when combined with a modest amount of alcohol and the removal of the wives.

Like other have said, the Wii is working on graphics processor of yesterday, but the fun the games provide quickly remove the stun the visuals may give.

I can't wait to see how the online play works out. Hopefully it's well done.

If you have a Wii, post your console number so we can exchange them. I'll add mine later as I'm not at home.

Maybe we should start a TG Wii firend code thread. I'm at work right now so I can't post my number.

Re: Wii - first impressions?

Heh, my sister bought one, and I played it for a bit (read: ....like 3 days). Must say, the Wii sports is more fun than it ought to be. The lasting appeal of the motion controller will largely depend on gaming companies now I expect, but it was a lot less gimicky upon using it than I figured it was going to be, and I can imagine we'll see some interesting concepts down the pipe.

The only other thing I wonder about is the sensitivity of the motion sensor over time, and how long they will last before getting worn out. Though they've already outlasted the TV's of several players, so I suppose that's a good sign? =P

Re: Wii - first impressions?

I wonder how the Wii controller will do playing an FPS. We all know the the keyboard & mouse rule FPS, but will the Wii open the door to an acceptable alternative?

Re: Wii - first impressions?

Weirdly enough, the best FPS i've played on the Wii so far has been a little minigame called Monkey Wars that is part of Monkey Ball Banana Blitz's multiplayer. It is perfect. Red Steel's controls are ok, but definately not perfect. They are saying that Far Cry controls pretty well, so I'll definately rent that. Call of Duty 3 has some great moments, but you can tell the Wii development of the port was rushed.

I have enjoyed Rayman to no end, and 2 vs 2 Madden has been some of the best guy boasting playing ever.

Did I mention that Wii Sports tennis consumes me, and I have never played real tennis before?

All in all, I am very happy with the Wii so far. I look forward to Battalion Wars coming out next year, and doing some multiplayer battles with that online!

Re: Wii - first impressions?

boudreux, do you know how to put wicked spin on the ball like the high rated ai players do. I can do top and back spin but not side spin.
