[edit] The Heavens Fall
The 3rd Special Forces Detachment is a Tactical Gamer in-house squad. Our motto is "The heavens fall" and our nickname is the "Thunderbolts". Our nickname and motto reflect our commitment to infantry tactics that employ overwhelming force and power. We execute these tactics with skillful precision and high situational awareness. We pride ourselves on the ability to take on a force of superior numbers and wipe them off the map. Those that face the 3rd SFD in combat will know the destruction that a thunderbolt brings when the heavens fall.
[edit] 3rd Organization
The Thunderbolts have only a single active unit. There are no divisions or fireteams within the 3rd. With the exception of the command, all soldiers within the 3rd are at the rank of Sergeant. New members to the 3rd enter at the rank of Specialist, and are promoted to Sergeant on their full acceptance into the team following a probationary period. On entering the 3rd, each soldier chooses a specialty, allowing them to fit into the Thunderbolt's tactics and strategies. If any member of the 3rd takes issue with a new member, they should bring it up privately with the Lieutenant and Captain via PM.
[edit] Ranks
- Captain – Commander of the 3rd
- Lieutenant – 2nd in command of the 3rd
- Sergeant – A fully-fledged member of the 3rd
- Specialist - A new member in their probationary period
[edit] Specialties
- Weapons - Mastery of all anti-personnel weaponry. Focuses on destruction of 'soft targets'
- Medic - Specializes in healing and reviving of teammates in addition to area sweeping and fire support roles
- Armor - Proficiency in piloting all vehicles. Focuses on destruction of 'hard targets'
[edit] Recruitment
The 3rd SFD selects its members based on their enthusiasm for playing Battlefield 2142 and commitment to the detachment's mission. Individual skill and personality are both very important. We are looking for skilled players with fun and mature attitudes. Each candidate must meet the following criteria before being considered for membership:
- Be a Tactical Gamer Supporting Member
- Read, accept, and follow the rules and guidelines set forth in:
- Be an active member of Tactical Gamer's Battlefield 2142 Forums.
- Have the ability and willingness to use Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) in game
We are recruiting. If you would like to join the 3rd SFD please contact Crux. Those that are interested in joining the thunderbolts may be invited to tryout. A tryout consists of multiple rounds played with the Lieutenant, Captain and other members of the 3rd. Recruits may be asked to demonstrate skills within a controlled practice environment before being accepted. The length of the tryout period varies. During the tryout, we will be evaluating your skill level and personality to ensure that they both fit well with the 3rd SFD.
[edit] Leave of Absence
If any member of the 3rd anticipates being absent for more than one week, they should notify the Captain and Lieutenant. If their expected absence is to be greater than two weeks, they will be placed on inactive status with an expected return date. If they have not returned to active participation within a reasonable time frame of their original expected return without notifying the officers of an extension, then their membership to the 3rd may be revoked.
[edit] Standard of Behavior
All members of the Thunderbolts are held to the highest behavioral standards at all times. We expect our members to act with humility, kindness, and respect towards other people. It is to be expected that soldiers not of the 3rd will exhibit lower skill levels. Thunderbolts should look to take a role of teacher rather than become abusive to lesser-skilled players. In addition no remarks of a racist nature will ever be tolerated in any way.
Should a member of the 3rd encounter an abusive player who is seeking a verbal confrontation, he or she should not engage them. Rather, respond by ignoring them. If they are on the other team, let your rifle do the talking.
[edit] Competition and Practice
At present the 3rd SFD is not participating in any competition leagues.
The following is the Thunderbolt's results in competition to date:
- BFCL 8 vs 8 Conquest Spring Champions Battlefield Conquest League

[edit] Standard operating procedures
The 3rd Special Forces Detachment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are a set of methods this in-house squad has established for its members to follow in carrying out a given operation or in a given situation upon the battlefield. They are designed to maximize efficiency thereby minimizing casualties, while substantially increasing the odds of achieving complete mission success. These SOPs closely adhere to those established by Tactical Gamer for Battlefield 2142 that cover the same topic, but differ in areas where the 3rd SFD requires more practical detail to meet the detachment’s unique needs.
[edit] Squads
The 3rd SFD has established the following SOPs pertaining to overall play.
[edit] In-game Squads
If any member wishes to create a squad of 3rd SFD players, then a custom squad should be created using the appropriate naming convention.
[edit] Naming Convention
Since squad names are limited to eight characters, all 3rd SFD squads can be named using the following convention:
- 3rd SFD
It is possible that multiple squads may be created on the same team. To help alleviate any confusion, subsequent squads shall include an appropriate number.
- 3rd SFD2 - represents an additional squad
- 3rd SFD3 - represents an additional squad
3rd members can also make up their own squad names.
[edit] Locking Squads
During the initial delay period before a round begins, Squad Leaders may choose to lock a squad to ensure other 3rd SFD members are allowed an opportunity to join it. However, the squad should be unlocked during normal play to give non-members a chance to learn more about the 3rd SFD or the style of play promoted by Tactical Gamer.
exceptions to this rule:
- A smaller squad is required for tactical reasons
- Holding a spot for a member that is expected to show up soon
- squad members are practicing a tactic that requires knowledge we are unable to relay in a reasonable amount of time to an average person that may join.
- we are evaluating a recruit under controlled circumstances
[edit] Communications
The 3rd SFD has established the following SOPs pertaining to communications.
[edit] TeamSpeak
The 3rd SFD uses the Tactical Gamer TeamSpeak server to communicate outside of Battlefield 2142’s VoIP system. We maintain a sub-channel under the Team Channels called 3rd SFD.
[edit] Keybindings
The following is a list of standard keybindings used by the detachment:
- Ctrl + 1 = switch to channel In-House Squad Channels
- Ctrl + 2 = switch to channel 3rd SFD
- Ctrl + 3 = switch to channel Battlefield 2142
- Ctrl + 4 = set volume down 10%
- Ctrl + 5 = set volume up 10%
[edit] Radio Check
The standard military Radio Check serves three purposes. First, it immediately identifies the name (call sign) of the individual joining the radio net. Second, it provides clear and concise feedback to the individual joining, as to how loud and clear other people on the same radio frequency hear their transmissions. Finally, it permits players to make adjustments to their settings, in order to improve how well others hear them from a loudness perspective, as well as the clarity of their transmissions.
In the virtual world of Battlefield 2142, soldiers do not use actual military radios, but with VoIP the similarities to real military radio practices are quite a good fit. The detachment has taken the liberty of abbreviating and modifying these procedures somewhat for the sake of game play simplicity.
[edit] Signal Strength (Loudness)
- Faint signals, barely perceptible
- Very weak signals
- Weak signals
- Fair signals
- Strong signals
[edit] Readability (Comprehension)
- Unreadable
- Barely readable, occasional words distinguishable
- Readable with considerable difficulty
- Readable with practically no difficulty
- Perfectly readable
The referencing of "5 by 5" stands for the combination of Signal Strength and Readability. "5 by 5" is a short form way of saying "your signal strength is strong and you are perfectly readable.” In actual practice, many players state the real words as opposed to using numbers. Saying "loud and clear" or "strong and readable", are perfectly acceptable.
[edit] Contact Report
All military units are trained to use a standard form of radio procedure for reporting encounters with enemy forces. The Contact Report minimizes extraneous radio traffic by creating a clear, concise and common format for reporting enemy activity. Therefore, everyone listening on the radio net understands exactly the nature and scope of the enemy threat. In the virtual world of Battlefield 2142, soldiers do not use actual military radios, but with VoIP the same methodology can be utilized.
[edit] Format
The Contact Report format quickly provides a squad with the following information:
- Who is sending the report
- Location of the enemy
- Estimated strength, type and armament of the enemy
- Apparent intentions of the enemy and/or their direction of travel
- Action the squad member plans to take
- Recommendations the squad member may have, if anything
[edit] Commo Rose
BF2142 offers a feature by which a player may identify an enemy using the Commo Rose. By using this feature, the first four questions listed above are answered, relayed to the player’s squad and represented on all squad members’ map/mini-map. This method keeps VoIP chatter to a minimum and should be the first step to providing a Contact Report.
The player providing this Contact Report should follow up over VoIP with any action they plan to take or any recommendations on actions. The Squad Leader should respond with an affirmative or negative.
In the case where using the Commo Rose is ineffective or too burdensome to use (due to the number of enemy units), then the player should use the VoIP feature to make the report. This report should remain short and to the point to keep VoIP chatter to a minimum.
[edit] Usage
Contact Reports can be abused and over used. They are most useful in a situation where various squad members are geographically separated and performing individual mission tasks. If the entire squad is in close proximity of each other and everyone sees the same threat, often it's redundant to send a Contact Report, unless the player believes that other squad members cannot see the actual threat. Therefore, information such as compass direction and possible enemy intentions might prove useful. The key is for players to use their best judgment in sending a Contact Report.
It should be noted that due to the higher command structure above the squad, that even if the squad was all together, the Squad Leader would send a proper radio Contact Report to the Commander.
For obvious mission critical reasons, Contact Reports are priority radio transmissions. In other words, when players hear the operative word “CONTACT” over VoIP, the entire radio net should go quiet and everyone should listen for the reporting call sign to send his information. After a bit of practice, using this technique becomes almost second nature and makes it much easier to communicate enemy threats. The Contact Report also provides the Squad Leader better command and control capability and improves the overall situational awareness of the entire squad.
