BF2 TS TSO
From Tactical Wiki
At Tactical Gamer, while playing Battlefield 2, TeamSpeak is used as an add-on to the built-in VOIP. You can use it for contacting an admin to report a problematic player while playing, or contacting the air squads, or for taunting someone after you've knifed them.

[edit] TeamSpeak setup
[edit] Downloading
You need to download the TeamSpeak client from the TeamSpeak download page before getting started. It is installed just like any other Windows program.
[edit] Server Setup
When you first start TeamSpeak, you open the Connection menu then select Connect. This will open your TeamSpeak server address book. Right click in the white area under Servers and select Add Server. Then you need to fill out the Tactical Gamer server information as follows. You can also put Battlefield 2 Retail in to the Default Channel section if you automatically want to join that channel when you connect.
The TeamSpeak server password can be found in this thread.
Now, you can click cancel because you're not quite ready to connect to the server. Your server information will be saved, don't worry.
[edit] Sound Settings
This is actually a very important step because you do not want to annoy other people in your channel!
Go in to Settings then select Sound Input/Output Settings.
Set the Voice Send Method to Push to talk, then hit the Set button. Now, you press a key or mouse button that you want to use. Holding down this button will make you transmit. In this example, the middle mouse button is used.
It is highly recommended that you DO NOT use the same button as you use for VOIP transmitting in BF2.
[edit] Server Keybinding
Now, you will setup a basic keybindings for connecting to the server. This will mainly introduce you to the keybinding system in TeamSpeak, but it will also save you a couple mouseclicks when you first start TeamSpeak.
Go in to Settings -> Key Settings.
You are now at a list of your currently defined keybindings. Hit Add.
Now you want to select a keystroke combination that you want to use to connect to the Tactical Gamer server. Ctrl-Shift-T is an easy one to remember. You set each button button one at a time, so you'd hit the first "Set" button then press Control. Do the same for Shift and T.
In the action section, select Switch to in the first box, then Server in the next. Then in the dropdown box, select TacticalGamer (assuming that is what you called the server in the Server Setup section.
[edit] Silencing Annoying Sounds
TeamSpeak is quite helpful in that it gives you audio notification for a lot events. Some of these are helpful, some can become annoying after a while.
Now, you'll turn off the "Player joined" and "Player left" sounds.
Go in to Settings -> Options and select the Sound Notifications tab. Open the Joining and leaving channels section, and blank out the Wave File entry for the joining and leaving events, like so:
Save your settings by pressing OK.
[edit] Sound Devices
Getting TeamSpeak to work properly with the built-in VOIP can be a little tricky. The following screenshot, from Settings -> Options, is known to work with a Soundblaster Live! Value card.
[edit] Connecting
Press your keybinding to connect to the Tactical Gamer server. You will initially start out in the default community channel, unless you filled in the Default Channel in the server setup.
Now, you'll probably want to setup some keybindings for switching channels. Again, go in to Settings -> Key Settings. Add a new keybinding, decide what keys you want to use, and set them. Then in Action, select Switch to, Channel, and the channel you want to switch to. Some convienent settings are Ctrl-Numpad3 for Battlefield 2 Retail and Ctrl-Numpad2 for Special Forces. You should do these keybindings while connected to a server so that the channel names can be populated.
You'll probably also want to setup a keybinding for raising and lowering the volume 10% at a time. Ctrl-Numpad+ and Ctrl-Numpad- are good choices.
[edit] TeamSpeakOverlay Setup
[edit] Downloading
TeamSpeakOverlay's website is where you'll download TSO. Extract it wherever you want, perhaps in C:\Program Files. For convenience, you'll probably want to create a shortcut on your desktop so you don't have to navigate through your hard drive each time you want to play.
[edit] Nickname
When you open TSO you'll be presented with its control window. You'll want to setup a few options. The first is the nickname that you use. This must be the same as the nickname you used in the Server Setup section.
[edit] Display Options
TSO, by default, displays quite a bit of information. You may prefer a minimalist approach that just displays your current channel and the name of the current speaker.
Select the Display Tab, and you have a list of items you can configure in the dropdown fox. Since BF2 places the current speaker on the left middle part of the screen, a good place to let TSO place the current speaker is in the right middle part. You probably want to show when you're talking and what channel you're in as well. The Alpha when Inactive slider is for the transparency of TSO when no one is talking. 0% is completely transparent, so 20% still allows the channel name to be slightly visible but not too intrusive. The timer setting keeps the name of the speaker around for 1.5 seconds after they stop talking, just in case you don't look over there quickly enough.
You can probably disable the rest of the displays by going through the drop down list and unchecking Enable this display for the rest of them.
[edit] Important BF2 Setting
You want to make sure you go in to the Debug section and check the Use Alternative DirectX Method checkbox. If you forget this step, Punkbuster will probably kick you shortly after joining a BF2 server.
Select Done after you've checked this box.
[edit] Desktop Shortcut
Having to enable and hide TSO each time you start it can be a bit annoying. After you have all the options set to your liking, you can change the desktop shortcut to automatically enable and hide TSO when you click on it. You'll still have to click OK to a box, but that's a bit less annoying.
Go in to the shortcut properties by rightclicking on the icon and selecting properties. You'll simply want to add /AUTO to the end of the Target in the shortcut, like so:
If the Target of your shortcut initiall has spaces in it, then there may be quotation marks around it. The /AUTO addition needs to be outside of those quotation marks. So your final target may look something like "C:\Program Files\TSO\tso.exe" /AUTO.
TSO will put an icon in the system tray so you can restore its window.
[edit] Putting it all together
- When you want to play BF2 with TS and TSO running, you'll want to first start TeamSpeak and connect using your server keybinding.
- Switch to the Battlefield 2 Retail channel, either using a keybinding or double clicking a channel.
- Perform a radio check.
- Start TeamSpeakOverlay, click OK to the window
- Start BF2
- When BF2 ends, BF2.exe may still be running and you won't be able to start it again until you go in to the task manager and end it. This can become annoying when first setting all your options up.
[edit] Using TS during a scrim
Occassionally, Tactical Gamer will scrimmage against other communities. For these events, you'll want to be in the Scrim Waiting Room channel to get important information. When you highlight the channel name, look in the right pane, and you'll find the server IP and password that the scrimmage will be played on. Do NOT ask for the IP or password without first making sure that the information is not listed there. Here is an example:
