[edit] What to buy
First of all, you'll need to buy Battlefield 2. It is available for the PC either on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Your favorite electronics store, mega-mart, or online retailer should carry the game. You will also need the Euro Force and Armored Fury Booster Packs for BF2. There is also a Deluxe Edition that includes the Special Forces Expansion Pack, however that Expansion Pack is not often played on TG servers and is not a requirement for play.
[edit] Patching
As with most online games, you'll need to patch your game installation before playing online at Tactical Gamer. At the time of writing, June 25, 2006, the 1.3 patch was current. It can be downloaded from a variety of sources listed here or (for Tactical Gamer Supporting Members only, here.
The correct order of installation for Patch 1.3 is as follows:
- Battlefield 2 from the box
- (optional) Special Forces Expansion
- 1.3 Full Patch
- Euro Force
- Armored Fury
- 1.3 Full Patch
[edit] Servers
Currently, Tactical Gamer hosts four Battlefield 2 servers. Two of them are for everyday play, while the other 2 are reserved for special events and TG Sponsored squad practices. Those two servers support reserved slot access for Tactical Gamer supporting members.

[edit] Playing at TG
[edit] Read the Rules
You should familiarise yourself with the rules on our servers. These rules are intended to provide balance and fair play and encourage teamplay, not to inhibit anyone's style of gaming, so read them carefully and feel free to contact an admin if you have any questions.
[edit] Join a Server
Join one of our BF2 servers. In most cases, server 1 is the most populated and in U.S. peak times, it's quite full, so keep trying! Take note that Supporting Members are entitled to reserved slots on TG servers and in some cases, new players are kicked to make room for them on a full server. Don't despair, try to connect again or become one yourself
[edit] Join a Squad
Join an existing squad. It is required to join a squad on TG servers and you will be auto-kicked after 60 seconds if you don't, so be quick! Sometimes, you will see a squad named LEARN TG. This is the first squad you should try to join, since it's the one specifically designed for new players and the Squad Leader's main purpose it to help people new to our servers. Joining any squad being led by someone with a |TG| tag of some description is also a step in the right direction. |TG| veterans are familiar with our rules and very helpful to new players, so you can't go wrong.
If you like to fly, you should join a dedicated air squad, usually named JETS, ATTACK HELO, GUNSHIP, AIR SUPPORT or something similar. TG flyboys are happy to share their hardware and show you the ropes, but it's always best to get into the specialty squad, so you can communicate with them.
You should be well on your way to the best team-based gameplay you have ever experienced.
[edit] Have Fun!
Have a great time!
Tactical Gamer is all about fun. We are not a clan, we don't have tryouts and we don't grief new players. If you like the way we play and play by our rules, then you are welcome and can play TG for life.
[edit] Common Keybinds
[edit] Don't "Fat Finger" The Parachute Key
In Battlefield 2 (and prior versions), it is quite common to have to parachute while falling from a high altitude. When things are hectic it is sometimes difficult to find the default key for deploying your parachute which is akwardly set with the number 9 key, to the left of the Backspace key. I recommend you change this to your Jump key.
To do this, simply open open a text editing program (I prefer Notepad) and go to your My Documents/Battlefield 2/Profile/ and then select the folder with the proper profile (it's numbered based on the order your profiles were created). Next, open up the Controls.con file. Be careful not to open up and change anything else.
Now that you have the Controls.con file opened up in your text editor, do a search for c_PIWeaponSelect9 . It should be near the very top of the file. Now, look for IDKey_9 on the same line. Change the 9 to Space. It should now look like IDKey_Space.
Now, when you're in the game and you jump out of that airplane, or off of a roof, all you have to do is simply constantly hit the SPACE bar and your chute will open making things far easier than having reach over and hopefully hitting that little 9 key (along with every other key around it, no doubt).
[edit] Others
For other little odds-and-ins, go to the Controls part of the in-game Options menu and up the sensitivity on the planes and vehicles and remember to set your preferred mouselook settings (inverted or not). You don't want to jump in your vehicle in an online game and immediately crash it because you wanted to pitch down and not up.
